There were the injuries to Romo and Dez Bryant and the presence of Greg Hardybeing an on- and off-field distraction. The offseason hasn't seen any major injuries, but there are abundant inquires about whether the Cowboys are filling the roster with the right people.

Rolando McClain has been suspended 10 games, while another defensive starter,Randy Gregory could also be staring down a 10-game ban after he was flagged again just before training camp for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. Still another -- DeMarcus Lawrence -- will miss four games. Were it not for the suspensions, Dallas would have a decent defense/pass rush.

And still Jerry Jones and Jason Garrett are willing to defend the "great culture" around the team.

"This organization through the years has developed a great culture by bringing in the right kind of guys," Garrett said, via Lorenzo Reyes of USA Today. "But then you take some risks, you take some chances on some other guys to see if you can help them fit in that culture. We have a number of great success stories of guys fitting into that culture.

This commentary, particularly at this point in time, very much gives the appearance of a desperate attempt at damage control. Yes, there are a significant number of veteran players who fit the mold of RKGs. Good.

Lately, however, it's unfortunate that there have been a fair number of those who haven't distinguished themselves in the RKG mold. That's not what everyone within and without the organization would really like to see. Not good.

Understand that I'm not saying this to pour salt on the wounds that have been suffered as of late. Nevertheless, it would surely be admirable if the bad characterizations of recent times were to subside for a lengthy span of time. Then, damage control wouldn't be necessary.

Truly unfortunate that the team is in the position to have to defend themselves.

The story should have been..."Why do NFL players like Weed?"
BC the country as a whole does in their age demographic. They are able to smoke and keep their jobs, etc. Used to be a country of drunks, now this gen sees that is more harmful to their bodies and moved away from binge drinking at nights to relieve stress. Policy needs updating.

Dumb rules are still dumb...

I think they only "help" guys that they think can be a big star for them.
Guys like Joe Randle who obviously had some mental issues, they just abandoned him after cutting him, and treated him
poorly before cutting him.

Inaccurate. They showed infinite patience with Randle. Most teams would have cut him after stealing panties and cologne, not hand him a starting job for him to blow. Then he was insubordinate and still kept his job. He basically had to get locked up before they took any action.

The problem is not that they are abandoning imbeciles and loafers. The problem is that they are extending so much rope that they invariably hang themselves. If the team were run less like a friendly rehab center, there might be an impact.

Agree with everything you say but I'd like to add the following...

Jerry is more likely to offer the "rehab center" treatment as long as the player offers the potential to add a competitive edge on the playing field. Only problem with that benevolence is the selfish, immature, or dumb opportunists compromise what is a somewhat stable culture.

All it would take is biting the bullet quickly on one of the malcontents to send a message. Sure it would hurt the talent, but in the long run it would set a strong tone that might register. As it stands now everyone knows that they can push the envelope.
