Jerry Jones backs Romo

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was direct when asked whether Tony Romo has too much latitude regarding the offense.

"No I don't," Jones said Tuesday morning during his twice-a-week radio show on 105.3 The Fan Dallas-Ft. Worth. "No, not at all."

The question was posed to Jones because Romo threw two fourth-quarter interceptions in Sunday's 37-36 loss to the Green Bay Packers, who rallied from a 23-point halftime deficit.

Jones maintained that Romo has to "take risks" with the ball in order to help Dallas (7-7) remain in the playoff hunt.

"When it basically has to unfold for him out there, the defense gets out of their structure, we get out of our structure on pass routes," Jones said. "All of a sudden, you're into a little more sandlot-type football. In doing so, there's more risk that's involved. Make no mistake about it: With where we are with our personnel, we're going to have to take risks."

Romo changed a run play to a pass before throwing an interception with 2:46 remaining in the game. Coach Jason Garrett said Romo shouldn't have changed the play in that situation under any circumstances, despite the fact the Packers stacked the line of scrimmage.

Jones, however, said he agreed with Romo's decision, asserting that the Cowboys needed to show "aggressiveness" to answer the Packers' comeback bid.

"I was for the aggressiveness we showed ... and it can apply to many parts of the game," Jones said. "But in this particular case, aggressiveness was throwing the ball on our end of the field -- throwing the ball in there close.

"Aggressiveness with Romo can mean not throw the ball but buy more time, which increases the chances of having a bad play."

Jones said he understands the decision by Romo and finds fault instead with the quarterback's throw.

After he avoided pressure from Clay Matthews, Romo threw behind wide receiver Miles Austin. If the throw had been a little ahead of Austin, the receiver had plenty of open field to run toward.

"You get a little bit more loop on the ball to the interception that occurred that was going to Miles Austin," Jones said. "You get that thing up in the air, a little more loop on it [and] Miles is still running.

"[Romo] had pressure, he had pressure. He called off the tight end [Gavin Escobar] coming across because he thought theoretically that would bring another linebacker into the position to throw the ball."

Romo's interception led to a touchdown for the Packers, giving them their 37-36 lead.

On the next possession, Romo threw another interception, this time on a pass intended for receiver Cole Beasley.

After the game, Beasley blamed himself for not making the right read on the route.

Romo's pass was behind Beasley, who kept running toward the middle of the field. If Beasley had ran his route toward the sideline, where the pass was directed, he'd have had a better chance of catching it.

However, Jones saw fault with both Romo and Beasley.

"It was probably one you could take back and should take back," Jones said. "But still, I understand. I think it's a toss-up there as to who was at fault there.

"We just got the ball intercepted there and made a bad play. Beasley has a good reason for playing the ball the way he did, the way we read that play, and Romo has a reason for throwing the ball there."

What's he supposed to say? he just gave this guy $100 million dollar contract. You expect Jerry to question his decision making at this point? We should have been running the ball and controlling the clock with a big lead In the 2nd half period. Romo should never have even been in that situation to begin with.

I didn't expect him to say anything else, besides to not say this makes Jerry look like he made a mistake giving Romo his big contract. And we all know he would NEVER admit to being wrong

First of all, the Cowboys would not be in the position they are in if not for Romo.

Second of all, a HC should never give Romo the options to run or pass.

And third, the defense let the Packers come from behind,

You think Romo could have spoken up and said "ummm... we need to be running the ball more since we have the lead, and can't be counted on AND Murray is a total beast today?" No, Romo just loves to throw the ball, throw throw throw... no thinking on his part.

Romo's coach needs manage leads better so that his QB isn't forced to take risks that he shouldn't have to in the first place.

Romo has lost games because of dumb decisions, I know it, you know it, and Martha Stewart know it.

But, as the HC preaching "situational football" he is the also responsible for the situation that Romo was in, and Romo made the mistake.

This is what happens when we have a HC that isn't in control of his team. Romo should have never been presented the opportunity.

I can get on board with that line of thinking. Doesn't absolve Romo from being a non leader and not speaking up though.

I will say: Jerry was right about one thing:

It wasn't so much the decision to throw- but the throw itself. Not an All-Pro throw.

He had been a little off-target all day really.

The more this offense plays aggresive, the more Romo's timing will be better. The problem is, this team is all over the place in terms of identity. Every week this seaso, you got Romo dropping two yard passes to his WRs, with the exception of Denver and Green Bay, taking a few shots here and there. If this team puts the pressure on offensively, they are gonna win way more than they are going to lose. Some of the passes by Romo down the seams to Witten were ridiculous.

I dont know why people are using this quote as something bad against Jerry. The play was there, hes right..you should blame Romo for the throw.

The problem wasn't their aggressive passing, the problem was they totally abandoned the run completely, taking out any dimension of surprise. They effectively made themselves one-dimensional, when there was no need to. The first half, WRs were getting separation because the DBs had to worry about the run. The whole second half, they were playing up-tight all day.

Seems like this team is imploding right before our own eyes. Let's see.

1.Jerry wishes now he didn't fire Ryan
2.Jerry is basically blaming Romo for the INTs and saying it publicly.
3.Jerry fights with Ratliff, Ratliff leaves and now playing.
4.Romo screams at his HC on the sideline.
5.Witten screams at his HC on the sideline.
6.Dez walks off the field.
7.Team loses back to back games in historic fashion
8. Murray upset cause he can run, yet no one lets him.
9. Jerry thinks that losing is fine as long as it's entertaining.
10. A lot of Romo fans are turning on him.

Its just so embarrassing , these are the questions the head coach should be answering ,not the owner..

Why is Jerry not asked about this pathetic defense?

So. true. He could just factually state that with the injuries/turnover we have , it all comes down to the other parts of the team lifting their game
to cover for any deficiency in the game being played at that time.

As others have said, it should not have come down to that to begin with......................what a dumpster fire this team has turned into.
