Jerry Jones Builds Giant Shell for TV Set

Baseball commissioner Bud Selig has come under fire — from, of all places, Congress, which clearly has nothing else to worry about — for Major League Baseball’s $700-mil deal with DirecTV, which airs the league’s “Extra Innings” package that lets viewers get about 60 outta-town games every week for $160, more or less. Selig wants cable companies to match the deal and to carry the Baseball Network, expected to launch in a couple of years; so far they’ve all balked, heh. Anyway, Selig defended his stance yesterday during a roundtable discussion at a meeting of the American Society of Newspaper Editors in Washington, D.C. But that’s not important.
What is important is the fact that also sitting at that table was National Basketball Association commissioner David Stern and Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. And, according to an Associated Press story I didn’t see in Dallas’ Only Daily today, Stern offered Jones “a bit of unsolicited advice” about the Cowboys’ billion-dollar stadium under construction in Arlington — and it involved plans for Jones to hang a giant high-definition television screen above the field that’s damned near as long as the entire field:

Jones talked about the need for the stadium experience to attract fans who might be tempted to stay home and watch the game on a fancy home entertainment system with high-definition television. As a result, the Cowboys plan to include a massive video screen that will hang high above the field, stretching 180 feet between the 20-yard lines.
Jones said the screen will help fans in the upper decks feel engaged in the game, but Stern warned that such video screens “are so beguiling the fans are just going to sit there and watch the board.”
He described a similar circumstance at an NBA game in Cleveland where he found himself constantly watching on the video screen even though he had some of the best seats in the house.
“I said (to myself), ‘What am I doing?’ … It really is a phenomenal thing,” Stern said.
So, Jerry’s building a billion-dollar home theater. Yeah, sounds about right. –Robert Wilonsky

Sorry if repost.

And people wonder why MLB isn't the American game any longer.

People would have to be crazy to pay $160 bucks just to fall asleep in their recliners.

yeah MLB is lame...

did yall hear what they did to Craig Biggio.....for as long as I can remember he has worn a pin on his cap (a little sunshine)...it was to represent his Charity....The Sunshine Kids....he has worn it for a very long time and MLB said nothing....now all of a sudden, they tell him, in his 20th year, that he is not allowed to wear the pin.....

They can turn the other cheek on the whole steroids and amphetamines thing. They can turn the other cheek on corked bats or repeat offenders for drug use and alcoholism. They can turn the other cheek on so many issues.....and yet, Biggio is doing something positive, something that would be awesome PR for MLB.....and they tell him no.

To hell with MLB and to hell with Selig....I hope Biggio wears the pin anyway and all his fine money goes to support his charity...and whatever money MLB fines him, I hope Drayton covers it....

I doubt that story will get any pub on their new "baseball channel", even if it did, who's watching?:D Yeah, if that's true, they suck!

Stern: Jerry, dont build it. The screen will be too distracting.

Jerry: That screen is going to be freaking sweet. Now shut the hell up.

Just for the record I don't think it sucked. I figured we'd had all seen the pictures.

Now that I look at it again it really does look like it's designed for the crowd in the very upper deck. It's suspended really high and I can really see how great it's going to be. The lower, closer decks will definitely have a great very of the field.

The big screen is for the very upper deck.

Why do you feel the need to knock baseball?

Something has to get us through the NFL off-season, besides the Mavs.

Can't we all just trash soccer?

I think we all are bored by that.

Jerry, if you are having second thoughts and have already bought the equipment, you can always put it in the basement of the house I'm building.

Uhhh! May I point out that the first paragraph of the story I posted was about Selig and Baseball's TV deal with DirecTV, that no one is going to buy, if you read it you would see that the first 8 words are: "Baseball commissioner Bud Selig has come under fire". And after all that, the story goes to Jones and Stern and that TV on steroids. YOU don't need to be calling ANYONE an idiot when YOU don't have a clue of what you're talking about.

BTW his name is spelled DAVID not DAIVD, go get a name book and look it up or read the story correctly this time like you didn't the first time. Just some friendly FYI if you want to get along with folks on here, DON'T CALL PEOPLE IDIOTS. Thankyou.:)

JJ wants the fans to want to come back. However that is done. Little details like that seem to escape Stern.

Maybe because it's a drug-enhanced shell of what it once was? Or maybe because the owners/league could give a rats *** about the people that watch the games? Or maybe, just maybe, the game itself SUCKS!

Yep, and also maybe it sucks because a player gets paid $20 mil a year or more to play every 5th day and doesn't even want to play half the season or travel on road games that he doesn't pitch in, must be tough to be that spoiled!
