CANTON In rooms full of Browns fans, the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce has stuffed its recent annual dinners with football. The 2013 speaker, Jimmy Haslam, vowed to become the owner who saved the Browns.

The 2015 speaker, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said he was sure Haslam was "on the right track."The 2016 speaker, Dallas Cowboys czar Jerry Jones, went to bat for Haslam in a way neither Haslam himself nor Goodell would.

"I'm totally convinced that the Browns are going to be a factor as we look to the years ahead," Jones told The Repository on his way out of Memorial Civic Center Wednesday night, after sharing his life story with a Chamber dinner crowd of more than 1,000.

Jones said the thought is based on his belief in the embattled Haslam. The endorsement came from an executive likely to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

"Jimmy Haslam came into the league as one of the very best owners that we have," Jones said before flying back to Texas on his private jet. "I'd put him in the top five. Right now. I recognize that he hasn't had the success. Not everybody does early on. We didn't have early success.

"But he's firing at it. He's committed. He works just as hard at this as with anything he's ever done."

I don't expect Jerry to be a good barometer for success. Hr hadn't seen it in 20 years.

he hasn't on the field....but he has in his wallet.

When you own the Cowboys it's hard to fail at making money. Even when you do fail at the Cowboys, you're still a top 5 earner in the NFL *JUST* because you're the Cowboys.

Besides, making money and being stupid is NOT mutually exclusive.

not just the NFL...isn't the Cowboys top 5 in the world in all of sports, with 2 being soccer teams? JJ is one hell of a business man. GM...not so much.

To be fair, the team was losing money at the rate of $1M per month when Jones bought the Cowboys. Jones turned the team into a virtual gold mine though. Granted, the team had an incredible brand identity before he bought them, but Jones has sent it straight into the stratosphere. Got to give him his props for that.

How much did he buy the team for and how much is it worth now?

No. As of 2015, the Dallas Cowboys passed Real Madrid as the worlds #1 Sports franchise. The New England Patriots and Yankees are also in the top 5. Now, this will change once the new practice facility and complex in Frisco opens up for business.
