IRVING – Tony Romo did not practice Friday and is listed on the injury report as questionable for Sunday's game at St. Louis.
But speaking on The Ticket (KTCK-AM 1310) Friday morning, Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said it's "very likely that he'll be ready to play," if the Pro Bowl quarterback can handle the pain from his fractured right pinkie.
"Whatever Jerry says," coach Wade Phillips said, "I'm going with."
Romo did not meet with the media this week and players declined to comment on the quarterback's status after Friday's practice. The Cowboys have a walkthrough today at Valley Ranch before flying to St. Louis later in the afternoon.
"The man has a broken pinkie," newly acquired wide receiver Roy Williams said. "I don't know if I could play with a broken pinkie. If the man plays, he's tough."
Romo was limited in a portion of Thursday's practice, only throwing passes, after he expressed a desire Wednesday to play against the Rams. When Romo was diagnosed Monday with the fracture, it was initially believed he would miss four weeks.
"Once we saw him throw, we started talking about a lot of different scenarios," Phillips said, "but we still have other factors we have to go over."
On Friday's radio show, Jones said Romo would not be subject to further injury. Romo suffered a nondisplaced fracture in last week's overtime loss to Arizona, but the fracture could become worse if Romo takes a hit or falls on it.
Romo wore a splint during Thursday's workout and has tinkered with using his ring finger to take pressure off his pinkie to help him throw.
If Romo does not start, Brad Johnson, who took most of the first-team snaps this week, would make his first start since 2006 when he was with Minnesota.
"I just want to make that clear that we haven't gone into this game saying, 'Oh, boy, if Tony can come in,' " Phillips said. "We're saying, 'Hey, we can win with Brad.' I think that's what we're looking at, and if Tony comes in, then it will be a bonus."
At the very least, the Cowboys have created a mystery for the Rams. One possibility is Johnson would start, but Romo would be available as a backup with Brooks Bollinger if the Cowboys struggle.
"I know how important the game is and how important it is to us," Jones said on The Ticket. "Our team, certainly, we're under siege to a certain degree with our injury situation right now, so I think we'll be a better team weeks down the road.
"We shouldn't compromise ourselves relative to our won-loss record. We've got to get into the playoffs."

And some wonder why no real coach wants to coach here. Until Jerry gets out of it I don't ever expect this team to be as dominant as it could be.
