The fact that Garrett got passed up yet again as a head coach for another team is great news for Dallas, not because it means that Garrett will return to Dallas, but because it's further indication his stock/credibility has been cut down to size; and that's good because it now gives Jerry Jones total leverage in deciding what to do with the offensive coaching staff.
Jones can now deny Garrett from having other interviews because no more such opportunities are likely to present themselves to Garrett. So Jones can see what he can do to upgrade the offensive coaching, and ultimately SETTLE on Garrett if nothing worthwhile comes up.
And if that happens, Jones can keep Garret and Phillips one last year and push the same coaching search to next season, giving Dallas total flexibility this year or next year in getting hte coach they want.
Jones can even force Garrett into a restructured contract next season with fewer responsibilities (as he proved he's not capable of all he had on his plate this past season). And if Garrett says no to restructuring, Jones can release him, and wait so late in the offseason to do it, that Garrett will just be out of work (so it would be to his interest to restructure); and in that case Ray Sherman can be promoted to offensive coordinator.
So this is really GREAT news for the Cowboys because ALL of the leverage now is in management’s court, which will allow them to build the coaching staff they want.
