Jerry Jones on why he gives Jason Garrett a ‘good grade’ on his mid-season evaluation

IRVING – Sunday’s loss in Detroit dropped Jason Garrett’s record as Dallas Cowboys head coach to 25-23 in what has been the equivalent to three full seasons.

Following consecutive 8-8 finishes during Garrett’s first two full seasons, the Cowboys are on pace for a third consecutive .500 finish as they sit 4-4 at the halfway point.
So how would Cowboys owner and general manager evaluate Garrett through eight games this season?

“I think when I look at where we are or where we can be as a team then we’ve definitely benefitted from how he is coaching the team as opposed to where he was as coordinator as well as head coach,” Jones said Friday on 105.3 The Fan [KRLD-FM]. “We’ve benefitted from that. Now, we’re 4-4. It looks like we’re in a rut. But when I look at how close those games have been then I can see it could’ve been better than 4-4. That’s the way I would look at it if this where it.”
The Cowboys’ four losses have come by a total of 14 points and nine of it occurred in Week 4’s 30-21 loss in San Diego.

Wow...............Jerry has officially lost it.

We "almost won" so that is good enough..............................what the hell type of logic is that?

Considering the talent we have on the ol/dl, I am not sure how anyone thought we would be better then 4-4.

This team should be 7-1 right now. Garret has not gotten the "blow it at the worst time" problem even slowed down, and has not improved in managing the last 4 minutes of of close games.

so, Jerry is prepping for the garrett extension anouncement - think it will be 2 years or more than 2 years ?

Think it will occur before the end of the season ?

“I wish everyone could see how hard he works, how conscientious he is, how smart, logical he goes about his business. All of this is good. He has the team communication-wise. All the things that you would look for, he’s there with. I give him a good grade, although he, more than me or anybody else, would like for it to be better than 4-4.”

For those of you who didn't want to open and read the actual comments. Or for the next time one of you guys asks an incredulous question about how anyone can possibly like Jason Garrett. Even if it's Jerry, it's pretty clear the guys is smart, logical, and a good communicator. I think we all knew that already, if we were 'being real, though, right?

even if all our old guys we counted on the DL were healthy, I thought we were a 9-7 club with questionable ability to get to the QB. But they aren't healthy, which everyone should of saw coming. And to add on to it, our safety position is now is just like the DL. a who's who of nobodies.

The same logic from a brain that thinks that moral victories count for anything.

Both safeties that played a part in blowing the lead had never started an NFL game, and they are playing on the road and trying to stop Calvin Johnson who was having a monster game.

We knew safety play was going to cost us a game or two going into the season. But thats just the reality of the current circumstances with this team.

Healthy or not, and all other excuses aside we had three games where we lost that should be wins. All those nobodies on defense and yet we still found ourselves with a 99% probability of winning the Detroit game only to engineer several boneheaded mistakes by even the great players. Romo throwing the ball away on the 3rd down on our second to last possession was just flat out football stupid. He has to know after all his time as a starter that eating the sack or running and sliding to keep the clock moving is the way to handle that. The coach should have made him aware of it in ALL CAPS if necessary. Then you have RBs who don't just run into the pile like they should, coaches failing to call kneel downs when it was the best possible call strategy wise, and defense players taking a peak in the backfield when even 9th grade football coaches tell you, "whatever happens, son, just don't get beat deep."

There simply is no excuse for this team to not be 7-1. They are underachieving yet again.

Garrett is nothing more than a puppet. He really doesn't deserve to be a coach or be paid the big bucks. The only reason why he is in Dallas is because he does whatever Jerry tells him to do and that he doesn't argue. He is nothing more than a "YES" man.

It comes to no surprise that the two head coaches that was successful was Jimmy and Parcells. Jimmy and Parcells are both football people. Its their way or the highway. But those are the two most successful times in Jerry era because they weren't afraid to win. Garrett is afraid to win. He won't go against anything that Jerry decides because he doesn't want to rock the boat. Thats why we have mediocrity in Dallas. Its starts with Jerry. Garrett is nothing more than a puppet who is part of the mediocrity with this team.
I'm sorry we was successful with Parcells? How many playoff victories we have? How many times did Parcells take us to the Superbowl?

Smart, logical and a good communicator that loses games in the end against any good team.

Boyoboy, do I want Garrett to succeed, but succeed he hasn't.

Everyone says the team has talent. So I guess talent can't be an excuse then, eh? Oh- I know, I know- injuries.

Because no team other than the Cowboys suffer injuries...

What is holding this team back, Idgit?

For years- What is it?

Don't just say the defense. What about the defense? Injuries? Other teams deal with the same thing.
The offense? What about the offense? Tell me what is wrong with this offense. What is the root of it's problem. The OL?
Isn't there a team of professionals, including Mr. Garrett who are supposed to gameplan according to their personnel's capabilities versus their next opponent?

Are they doing that? If they are, then what is the problem?

What is it?

Why can't this team succeed?

I'm being "Real" here. I want to know.

Can Jason Garrett honestly coach this team, through adversity, to win?

What evidence is there that supports this? Jerry's words?

I really want to know.

I have nothing- NOTHING telling me that we have a winner of a coach.

Maybe a terrific GM- I could definitely agree with that.

But a gameday coach?

I dare anybody to convince me, and you have read any of my posts in the past- I'm as fair as they come.

I dare anybody.

Not sure what to expect with all the injuries the last two years. You can say you have to overcome those to win in this league and you'd be right. However, the greatest problem other than a losing mentality was an incredible lack of depth compared to the better teams in the league. I think we've made a lot of progress since he's been HC on both fronts. The team plays very hard for him and doesn't give up. The talent deficit has shrunk IMO as well. There are certainly problems and I'm still not convinced he's the guy but I'm not ready to change regimes yet. I wouldn't have used the words Jerry did as I'm not satisfied.
