More good news for the Cowboys: Rookie linebacker Jaylon Smith might actually play this season, at least according to team owner Jerry Jones. Appearing on 105.3 The Fan, a CBS Sports Radio station, Jones revealed that he still hasn't ruled out Smith making his debut this year.

"We are waiting," Jones said, according to the Star-Telegram. "He's in great shape, great rehab shape with his knee. So we're just trying to hope that he wakes up a nerve, a nerve re-firing or a regeneration of a nerve, is just that. It's like a foot that's gone to sleep and shaking it till it wakes up is how I picture it to some degree.

"I'm not ruling out the fact that he could get on the field this year."

A day ago, Smith posted an optimistic message to his Twitter account, though it's unknown if that message related to his knee.

I have zero medical background but in no way do I see this happening. Any way for those looking for some hope, here ya go.

The only problem here is, if it doesnt by season end, then apparently the chances of it refiring start to significantly drop off.

The thing is, this dude is so damn talented that when that nerve actually does fire, he immediately steps in as the best LB outside of Sean Lee. And that's as a rookie. He is going to be GOOD. I don't blame Jerry at all for holding out hope on that front because it would be a huge boon for our defense.

That is exactly what I am rooting for as well.......Cowboy fans shouldn't turn this into one of the those bad things because they wanted someone else at 34

I can't help but feel the pick was...bad. Jerry&Co. kept claiming that his 10 year career was a matter of when and not if. But that's just not true. I am truly hoping for the best and will give Jerry credit if it works out, but can't shake the feeling that we never see this kid play again. Again, I hope I'm wrong.

Reminds me of the Black Mirror episode where the guy bombs a job interview and one of the interviewers insincerely states "We hope to look forward to seeing you again."

Based on Jerry's comments, which anyone should take with a grain of salt, there hasn't been any return of sensation or whatever in that lower leg so basically it's still the same situation. They are essentially just waiting for the light to come on.

Kind of a non-story right now. If the nerve wakes up and he can come in and improve the level of play at the MIKE having not been in camp at all, great. I'm not ruling it out, and I'm not holding my breath.

This is what's actually going on.

I wonder if the nickel LB spot next to Lee might be ideal for working him without throwing everything at him. (If he were ready)
