Jerry Jones to decide Wade Phillips' fate quickly

Whenever the Cowboys' season ends - either Sunday or Feb. 8 after Super Bowl XLIV in Miami - owner and general manager Jerry Jones will sit down with coach Wade Phillips within a day or two to resolve Phillips' 2010 status.

Jones holds the option on the fourth year of the deal Phillips signed in 2007 and has publicly supported the coach all season and especially down the stretch, adding that he does not want to make a coaching change.

"It's not something I wanted to talk about here a month ago when the issue was more about, well, changing, that was kind of the tenor where the energy was," Jones said. "I didn't want to talk about it then and I don't want to talk about it now. What I have said is to give you insight into the thinking that's going on, but as I've mentioned and it's not being trite, but it's not as though you had technical work to do here. Something is in place."
Phillips is 33-15 in three seasons and is looking to win his first playoff game with the Cowboys - or anywhere - in Saturday's wild-card matchup against Philadelphia.

I was saying the same thing to a friend just the other day. It looks like a complete meltdown Saturday Night is the only way we see Wade fired.

For the longest time I was on the Wade must win a playoff game kick.........still am, but I now see the leanings toward keeping him from Jerry.

I really want to see Wade do well and get to stay around. Watching his interview with Irvin made me like him even more. He really does seem like a good person. I know thats not what football is about. But it would be nice to see a nice guy actually finish first in a sport where everyone has decided that the tough guys are the only way to get results.
Especially a nice guy that took a job where he didnt even get to fully hire his staff.

Wade seems to have the respect of his players. I hope he gets to come back.

He earns it if we win a playoff game or two.

If we lose, not so sure he's earned it. And apparently Jones doesnt think so either, otherwise he'd have probably had him sign that new deal by now.

Well, even if we lose, Jerry still got his home playoff game and that HAS to make his ecstatic. If we win, it's a no-brainer, he'll be back. If we lose, I still think he'll be back. In Jerry's eyes...

home playoff game loss = playoff win on the road

because Jerry is still going to make loads more money if we lose at home than he would if we won on the road.

thats what im thinking, if jerry wanted to already keep wade, he would have already done the contract extension

i liked what jerry said today on thefan, i like the way things are going and things that are on the cusp, where the coaches and players have to win and need to win

I think the main criticism is that his teams weren't "tough enough" because he was so mild-mannered and ran "Camp Cupcake." I think the last three weeks probably dispelled that myth -- this team has laid the smack down the past three games and did so by physically dominating on both sides of the ball.

Let's face it -- Bill Parcells' team got run over by Sean Payton's Saints a few years back. Wade Phillips' team returned the favor.

sure, that is a huge consideration, but he HAS won 2 divisions in three years and has always had a winning record. if he loses saturday, both will be to teams he had to play three times in one season. My point is, he's done very well and it is very difficult, even for a good coach, to beat a team three times.

I was down on him earlier this year, but the proof is in the Defense. He's earned it.

If Jerry is even considering a move - he is 3 steps ahead and has a coach in mind and in his back pocket. Jerry wouldn't pull a Snyder - he will have a plan.

But I think his plan is to have Phillips around for 1 or 2 more seasons, and I am OKay with that, after his accomplishments so far.

Better than having some of our late coaches back again.

I got tired of have 9-7 and worse coaches.

I think this is more about Jerry covering all bases as opposed to having a predetermined view that Phillips is gone with a loss.

Look at Minnesota and Brad Childress. Think they might be wishing they hadn't done that midseason extension right about now? Jerry benefits nada by re-upping Wade right now. The contract issue isn't hindering his ability to coach, so why should Jerry force his hand and extend Wade at this moment.

You never know when a 44-6 loss in the horizon, and I think that is Jerry's lone trepidation here. A mere loss won't get Wade canned, I don't believe.

3 winning seasons, 2 nfc east titles. It would be hard to fire someone who's done that in their first 3 years. Not to mention, how many teams would scoop him up to be their D coordinator at the VERY least. I would puke if he got fired and picked up by Shanny and Synder to be the Skin's D coordinator. He would turn that pathetic D right around.

Wade has some of the greatest players in the NFL. If we lose Saturday he has to go.

Joe Torre had about a 1/2 dozen future hall of famers. Eventually he had to go too.

Give Wade some props but dont get crazy.

I think Jerry is going to have to make a move that he may not want to make.I also think that there are going to be more factors in the decision of whether Wade stays or goes than what happens in the playoffs.

A few thoughts or possibilities on what Jerry/Stephen will mull over.

Was the original plan to let Wade coach for three years and for Garrett to get some seasoning under Wade?

Is Jerry willing to take the chance of Garrett bolting to another team?

If Garrett is offered another job can Jerry talk him into staying on here until Wade is done?

Will Wade want to come back on a one year deal or will he want a multi-year extension?

Do you grade Wade the head coach and Wade the defensive coordinator as the same or seperate entities?

Do you promote Garrett and hire Wade as a defensive consultant?

If Garrett leaves how many of his assistants will he take with him and what effect will that have on the offensive unit?

Who is easier to replace,Wade the coordinator or Garrett the coordinator?

I think Jerry has taken the risk of putting Garrett in the position he's in and doesn't neccessarily want to lose Garrett to another team and see him develop into another Sean Payton.

On the otherhand I think he truly likes Wade as well and doesn't want to disturb what the team has accomplished since the KC game.

Regardless of the playoff success or failure, you just don't can a guy that's taken your team to 33-15 over three seasons. Can him now, and the cycle starts all over again.

I don't know if I buy a comparison to a manager in baseball. I think we have a lot more to lose by firing Wade, the architect of our defense, than we would with a baseball manager. But then I don't follow baseball much anymore, so I could be way off base.

In some ways, I agree with the bravado behind the message of "Either win us a playoff game or you're gone, ******." What I fear, however, is what lies on the other side. Garrett? Gruden? Who?

Whats the rush? I certainly wait until Shanahan hires in a DC in washington before I would fire Phillips. You certainly don't want to see him as the DC in DC next year. I don't think Garrett is going anywhere this year. It doesn't look like there will be that many openings and there are several big names trying to get back in.

He has almost the same record as Barry Switzer's first three seasons, Switzer was 34-14 in the regular season from 1994-1996 and 5-2 in the playoffs including one Super Bowl victory.

His win record is one less than Parcells' entire four year tenure which was 34-30 and 0-2 in postseason.

Chan Gailey was 18-14 in two seasons and 0-2 in post season.

Jimmy Johnson amassed a record of 44-36 in five seasons and 7-1 in postseason including two Super Bowls.

Phillips has what amounts to a .685 win percentage.

Which makes him the winningest coach since Jones bought the team.

Does anyone really take these stats seriously so out of context?

Which two coaches inherited playoff teams? Switzer and Wade.

Why in the world are we comparing their winning % to Jimmy or Parcells who took over complete rebuilding projects, or even Gaily or Campo who were hamstrung by Jerry playing fantasy football GM?

Honestly I see absolutely no reason this should be discussed at all by Jerry with the media. At all.
