Prior the season, few would have predicted that the Dallas Cowboys would get off to a 5-1 start.

Led by DeMarco Murray and a bruising offensive line, the Cowboys sit atop the NFC East with their best start to a season since 2007.

Head coach Jason Garrett has often been rumoured to be on the hot seat, but owner Jerry Jones gave the 48-year-old a rousing endorsement after a 30-23 upset of the Seattle Seahawks Sunday.

"There have been a lot of mistakes, a lot of disappointment, but he stayed the course and he’s turned around and put a team together that can compete like this and believe in what he is," Jones said to Jon Machota of the Dallas Morning News.

Garrett is in the last year of his contract and is a leading candidate to win Coach of the Year.

"His qualities as an individual, a human being, his ability to lead men, whether it be his staff or his coaches. But what we certainly wanted to see success on the kind of impressive scale that we saw it today."

"Certainly yes, this is probably Jason Garrett’s finest hour as a Cowboy.”

Jones went on to liken himself to a 'proud father'.

Dallas takes on its bitter rival New York Giants on Sunday.

I would have fired him two years ago. That is why I'm on this keyboard and not coaching the cowboys I suppose. :)

hey at least you admit it though right? I admit I was wrong about Rolando
he is getting more and more a crucial part of the team leadership. I really doubted his commitment but Im honestly so happy to be wrong about him. I only hope he and Lee can play a full year together, one of the leagues best lb core easily

I always liked Garrett - but last year I wanted him fired. I would have fired him - if there was a coach I loved was available. Glad Jones stuck with his guns (ego) and kept him around.

Same here. So don't feel bad. :D The recent coaching decisions (I.e. Linehan, Marinelli, and talking Callahan into coaching one level down to his strength) were all spectacular. I know that was mostly Jerry but it would be foolish to think Red didn't have some input. Jason appears to improving in the role of an overall strategist. The nuts and bolts strategy should be left to two excellent coordinators.

I agree. At the end of last season with yet another final day loss to keep us out of post season I felt Dallas should fire Jason, I have always liked him but it is about wins and this team was not getting over the hump. With a year remaining on his contract Jerry gave him the opportunity and Jason and staff are making the most of it.

Jerry--its only week 6; we haven't even played a division game yet. Yes, it was an awesome win, but Garret's finest hour? I would say that was when he took a 1-7 team and got them to 6-10. Can we at least get to the playoffs first before handing out the accolades on this season? There is a lot of work left to do.

Nailed it.
I would also add that it's a great win, but really if one was to look at this statement critically it really is a backhanded compliment.....

He's simply saying that this is Garrett's finest moment so far as coach of the Cowboys. I agree. It's his most impressive win so far in his young career.

What do you mean by "accolades on the season?"

you know whats remarkable? Garrett has rebuilt the franchise image, the roster, the mentality, and Jerrys input all while keeping a non losing record. 8-8 isnt good but look at teams like Texans or Titans or Jags. teams always looking like they are in rebuild mode and with high draft picks and with losing records year after year. to stay competitive isnt easy.

I'm still not drinking the Red Koolaide. I may be wrong and it turns out that his "process" is finally working, but I am attributing this current success to the quality of assistant coaches currently on this team. By my count there are what 4 former head coaches not including Garrett on this team? They may each have failed in their HC careers, but they had qualities that someone saw that was enough to make them head coaches at one point in time.

We all saw what this team was like with Garrett pressing all the buttons. JJ has limited his access to all the buttons and now we are seeing successes. I don't think that is coincidence. I am hoping that what we are seeing is the the right people finally in charge of the right buttons, Garrett included.

He spelled 'Linehan' wrong.

Yeah it's hard not to credit Linehan in the team's turnaround. Garret always payed lip service to the run game, but when the team was punched in the mouth it would revert to passing. Linehan has amazing trust in this team's ability to pound the ball. 3 yard pickups do not deter him in the least.

I think it's less Ginger and more the correct O and D coordinators and a long overdue, belated investment in the offensive line in the draft that is paying off in this finest hour. But I don't care who gets the credit, as long as I get to go to sleep happy that Sunday in late January...

Your point won't be taken well but I completely see your perspective. I have always thought Linehan and Marinelli deserve(d) more credit than anyone else on the coaching staff for these last five weeks. However, I am beginning to warm up to Jason "in his current role further removed from the nuts and bolts of the game plan".

We're lucky to have him. I'm struggling to find a way to give him all the credit he deserves, though, without having the decision to bring him in reflect well on Jason Garrett.

The only other option is to assume it was Jerry who insisted on the hire over Jason's strenuous objections, but believing that brings in a whole other set of issues to rationalize.

Lol. I credit Garrett for changing. My one and only gripe with Garrett is and always has been putting an emphasis on outsmarting opponents rather than just beating them through dogged execution. I think Linehan has changed that idea.

Perhaps Jerry and Jason had some equal say in Scott's hire. Regardless, Scott is no doubt shining brightly and deserves an abundance of credit for:

1. Reeling Romo's hero mentality in.
2. Preparing this team to run the ball successfully every week.
3. Having the intestinal fortitude to stick to the run knowing the heart of a defense lies in that front 7.
4. Focus focus focus.... Instilling a laser sharpness in the focus of the offense (Marinelli is doing the same on the other side of the ball).
5. Details. You better believe someone (I don't know who but I guarantee someone) from the practice squad was designated to be Russell Wilson in defensive practice sets this week. That level of detail and prep was not apparent at least from the public eye in the last several years. Pure speculation on my part but it's what I "feel".

Its no secret. I love some Linehan and what he has done for this offense. He has given them an identity of focus on detailed preparation which leads to an easy day on game day. I made a whole thread about it..lol. Love that guy. Best thing since sliced bread in big D.
