Jerry Jones: Yes, we miss Bill Callahan, but I'm not disappointed in Randle or our running game

Well, he's not on my list of disappointments," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said of Randle Friday on 105.3 The Fan's G-Bag Nation show [KRLD-FM]. "He specifically is not, nor is the running game. I know what a challenge we've had in that running game by not backing them off of us and letting them crowd that line of scrimmage. And had we dealt with the same dynamic last year, we wouldn't have had the running game we had last year. There's no doubt in my mind about that. And these running games or these offenses are fragile in the sense of their balance. And you can dominate it every now and then with a real, powerful, talented, effective either running game or passing game without having balance, but not very often."

While some put the blame on the offensive line not playing as well as it did a year ago, others suggest it has something to do with no longer having Bill Callahan. The team's former offensive coordinator/offensive line coach is now in Washington.

Do the Cowboys miss him?

"Yes," Jones quickly responded. "And we don't have to take a step back for that. Bill Callahan wanted to run the offense. We didn't get that done to thedegree that everybody was satisfied and we really had to make a decision.

"I'm glad that we got the staff that we've got, but you can't have it all.

Yes we miss Callahan, yes Callahan was bigger than anyone thought that didnt understand how important he is, yes i was thrilled when we got him, yes his presence made teh OL and Demarco better, yes we were dumb to let him walk.

No its not the end of the world, Give Pollack some time and who ever came up with the RBBC tried their best, but failed at who they brought in not the idea.

This confirms a power struggle about who was running the offense. Interesting. He did well with OL and running. I never saw much in him as a play caller.

But most posters think you can!

sometimes you can be thrilled with the staff and it still doesnt work. You cna have the best players and they wont all fit. Same with the staff.

Since the running game has not been the problem, I'm not surprised to hear Jerry's take here. As much as people didn't respect him when he came here, Callahan was a good coach, and losing him was definitely a hit. That said, keeping him here with Linehan in the role he wanted wasn't an option, so it's kind of academic.

In any event, Tony and Dez will come back, and the running game will open up, and we'll all be happy by the end of the season.

Surprise, surprise...

Garrett kept interfering and the OL was built, and Jerry thought he could get by with it, probably with Garrett's politics and constant interference, and now he's seeing the results...

Jerry said the year they brought in Linehan that Jason kept interfering with Callahan and it wasn't fair to Bill. And Jason was effectively the play-caller. He mentioned specifically that Callahan worked in a different offense as well, meaning West Coast. So Linehan allowed them to retain the offense, but without Jason Garrett near it, while keeping the same offensive terminology.

You can be sure with Callahan running the offense and the offensive shift, Garrett's offense would have eventually gone bye bye and he'd even be more unnecessary, because the offense wouldn't even be one he played or coached in.

Our running game would be better if we just went with one of our 3 guys as a full time back. I don't care which one. Let that one guy go carry the ball 20-25 times a game. And not on first and freekin 10 ever time. I really wish they would take this approach with CMike. I think he would be a star as our feature back...

What an interesting planet it much be that you live, on khiladi. It's like a parallel universe where things are close, but not exactly the same, to the things in the universe the rest of our are living in.

Jerry is saying that had Romo and Dez been out last year, they would have had the same problem as this year's team. In fact, they did when they played Arizona, except that in that game they at least had Dez, but they still couldn't run the ball.

The problem this year isn't Callahan being gone, it is that defenses have had almost nothing to worry about other than the run game.

Heck, I said it last year... the Cowboys wouldn't have had nearly as much run yards as they did last year if it wasn't for Tony and the passing game constantly converting 3rd downs into a new set of downs. And that is a huge reason why the run yards aren't there this year. The team hasn't been able to convert on third down and they've been kicking the ball right back to the other team. Plus, with the defense not getting turnovers, the number of drives the offense has had is way down.

Even in the second half of the season last year, team's were still stopping the run game better than they were in the first half of the season. Teams were adjusting to what Dallas was doing on offense, and while they couldn't shut it down completely (because they had to worry about Romo), team's were much better at slowing down the Dallas run game.

It is the lack of passing game that is wrecking the whole thing. Having so many injuries on defense likely cost the team a win or two against Atlanta/New Orleans... but it is what it is. Until Dallas has a QB that can convert on third downs, the team is going to struggle.

I'm not sure why people don't want to believe that. The one thing that everyone could agree on in this forum is that Dallas could afford to lose anyone except for Romo. Everybody always says, if he's hurt it isn't going to matter anyway... so now he is out for a couple of months and people are looking for reasons that the offense is struggling? Seriously?
