Jerry Rice's competitiveness is legendary. That's why it wasn't a surprise to hear Rice, unprompted, bring up Terrell Owens' recent comments on the Dan Patrick Show.

"Dan, here's the thing. I'm not the greatest receiver. Terrell Owens is the greatest receiver," Rice said, tongue firmly planted in cheek. "That's what I heard. He made a statement saying that if he had Joe Montana and Steve Young, he'd probably be breaking my records now. So Terrell is the greatest receiver."

Rice denied that he was bothered by the talk. "It doesn't at all. I'm not really that surprised by it. I never played the game for the records. I played to win championships, and do great things with my teammates."

That was a subtle dig at T.O. This one was less subtle, "I had some different quarterbacks, Matt Cavanaugh . . . It's all about how the wide receiver can complement the quarterback to make that person look better. Joe [Montana] told me I added five years to his career. ... It's all about making things a little easier for that other person."

Now that's something Terrell Owens has never been accused of.

I don't read any humility in that statement from Rice at all. But I will give Rice his due. He has numbers to say he clearly was the best of all time.

But come on Jerry. Just how long did you play with Matt Cavanaugh vs Joe & Steve?

To me, Jerry likes to come off as very humble to elicit even more adulation.

I have no problem at all with players who play with that "I'm the best and not afaraid to prove it" edge while ON the field. I think that can be done and still carry yourself with personal humility off the field. Jerry just doesn't strike me that way. Maybe I'm wrong.

I remember watching the game against the Raiders when Rice broke Jim Brown's touchdown record (1994 I think). He was simply playing on a different level than the other players on the field. One of the most dominant players I've ever seen play the game.

Jerry played 3 and a half years in Oakland and a half year in Seattle.

Far more than Owens has played with Buffalo and their sub standard QB.

Rice humble? man that cat is anything but. He cracks me up how he is always taking digs at T.O., when everything T.O. learned is from Rice.

Rice is the pot calling the kettle black.

Define always. I have seen this shot at TO in retaliation for TO's absolute lies. What other shots has he taken at him? I am unaware of any.

Like Rice or not, I think it was a perfect shot back at T.O.
Nicely played, sir.

News is loosely defined as something your audience needs to know or something your audience wants to know, and this is neither of those things. This is a blog entry, at best. Save stuff like this for your blogspot site, Rosenthal. People come here for actual NFL news, not some blurb made by Jerry Rice that has nothing to do with, you know, actual "news."

I'm glad he posted it. Different strokes for different folks.

Rice is the best WR ever. He need not even respond to what TO says. Kinda brings him down to TO's level a tad bit. Let TO run his mouth Jerry. Let your numbers do the talking for you.

I remember a TD he scored in that game. The DB was lined up about 7 yards off of Rice with his heels on the goal line. When the ball was snapped the DB began back pedaling as fast as he could. Rice ran a simple slant pattern and it was an easy TD. One of the easiest he scored during his career.
