On a day when rumors emerged about Tony Romo and a possible engagement to Jessica Simpson, the Dallas Cowboys quarterback gushed about a possible reunion with receiver Terry Glenn.
The reported Romo-Simpson romance was the lead item Thursday for a Chicago Sun-Times gossip column.
“My good Dallas sources whisper the twosome is so coosome, Romo already has been doing a bit of ring shopping!” the Sun-Times' Bill Zwecker wrote.
“It has been a whirlwind romance, that's for sure,” Zwecker quoted a longtime friend of Romo as saying. “But they both seem so much in love when you're around them.”
While Simpson and Romo are keeping mum about their reported relationship, the NFC's leading passer was happy to talk about a player that could help him land another kind of ring.
Glenn, one of only a handful of current Cowboys who have played in a Super Bowl, received limited repetitions during some passing drills for the second-straight day. The former Ohio State standout underwent two knee surgeries in the preseason.
Although coach Wade Phillips said it's unlikely Glenn would play in Sunday's home game against Philadelphia, the 12-year veteran has been in attendance at some meetings and is preparing to play, the Dallas Morning News reported.
The prospect of Glenn joining an offense that has scored more than 30 points in eight games this season and more than 24 in a team-record 14-straight games has Romo salivating.
“I like our offense a lot, obviously,” Romo said. “But with him coming back, we add another dimension that helps us be even more explosive, hopefully.”
Romo said he expects Glenn, 33, to come back strong.
“Terry's a very passionate guy,” Romo said. “I don't think he will go out there unless he can go. He's not a guy who can halfway (do) it. He goes all the way or doesn't.”
Glenn's ability to stretch defenses with his speed has been his trademark since he entered the league in 1996 and helped the Bill Parcells-coached New England Patriots reach the Super Bowl after that season.
“He gives us another guy (that) I don't see how you can play man-to-man coverage against,” Romo said. “I don't see how you can come up and sit on routes with him.”
Said tight end Jason Witten: “If we can get Terry back out here, too, we'll have a chance to be even more explosive. And that's really exciting. Terry at 75 percent is a lot better than a lot of guys at 100 percent. Just to have him out there will give us a spark.”
While sparks are apparently flying between Simpson and Romo, the Cowboys aren't worried about it being a distraction.
“Throughout the season, we've seen that,” Phillips said of Romo's ability to stay focused on his job. “Early in the season, (people) said, ‘The contract's going to bother him.' Now getting the money is going to bother him, and whoever he is dating the first time is going to bother him, and whoever is dating him the second time is going to bother him.”
But his play says nothing bothers Romo. He is on pace to finish the season with 4,497 yards, 43 touchdowns and a 107.3 passer rating, all club records, and he recently received a six-year, $67.5 million contract extension.
“He wants to do well, and he works at it,” Phillips said. “All the hard work he puts in is certainly paying off for him.”
Newman practices: Cornerback Terence Newman (toe, knee) returned to practice after missing Wednesday's workout.
“There is a possibility he'll start (Sunday),” Phillips said.
