Jets sign Andre Wadsworth

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) - The New York Jets signed defensive end Andre Wadsworth, out of football since 2000, to a contract Tuesday.

The 32-year-old Wadsworth, the No. 3 overall pick by Arizona in the 1998 draft, hasn't played in the NFL in six seasons after undergoing multiple knee operations.

His rookie year was his only full season, and he was then hampered by the knee problems. Wadsworth had three operations on his right knee and one on the left when the Cardinals opted to not pick up the last three years of his six-year, $42.143 million contract when they released him in 2001.

Because of the health issues, Wadsworth appeared in just 36 games in three seasons, starting 30. The former Florida State standout has 119 tackles, eight sacks, three fumble recoveries and one interception in his career.

Wadsworth walked on to the Seminoles and developed into what was thought to be a can't-miss NFL prospect when he was drafted after quarterbacks Peyton Manning and Ryan Leaf.

He was expected to join a Cardinals defensive line that featured three first-round selections: Wadsworth, tackle Eric Swann (1991) and end Simeon Rice (1996). But Swann also had knee problems, and Rice and tackle Mark Smith were considered malcontents. As a result, the four never took the field at the same time.

Injuries really did kill his career. A bust is a bust, but it wasn't due to not performing on the field.

It's a graveyard down here in AZ.

If I was a promising prospect, I would never want to play here.

The 2 WR they have seem to do all right not to mention they were always pretty good with defensive players, except on occassion it seems the bidwells look for that one player with bad knees and drafts them high in the first round.

I remember coveting him in 1998, I thought he was Charles Haley his rookie year, I thought Arizona had beasts at DE with Wadsworth and Simeon Rice. I was wrong....I was also 14.

I was also really high on him, and that entire defensive line. I was worried that they were going to be able to handle our offense.

JETS DUST ONE OFF

Adam Schefter of NFLN reports that the New York Jets have signed defensive end Andre Wadsworth, who was the No. 3 overall pick in the 1998 draft.

Wadsworth last played in the 2000 season.

That's six years out of football, folks. Six years. If he can make it all the way back, it's time for another Disney movie.

Dont forget that Arizona is a graveyard for football players. They are reborn once they leave the Bidwells (see Rice, T. Jones, M. Pittman).

Where in AZ do you live, and why do you post in Commanders colors?

Jerry Jones tried to trade up to get Andrew Wadsworth (#3) and cards turned down our offer (#8 pick (Greg Ellis), a No.2 pick (Flo Adams), and a future No.1 pick).

Now looking back, Wadsworth had eight total sacks in his whole career while Greg Ellis had 58 sacks so far. Not to mention Flo is a pro-bowl LT...and aother No.1 pick.

Sometimes the best trade is the trade you did not make.

Basically he tried to trade Ellis, Adams and Ekuban for Wadsworth.

Ellis ended up being the most consistent pass rusher/DE in the draft (One that included first round picks Wadsworth, Wistrom and Vonnie Holliday), Flozell sporadically dominates, Ekuban is an undersized but trustworthy reserve in Denver.

Wadsworth was supposed to be Bruce Smith or Charles Haley, instead he was injury prone and now that he's making a comeback at 32 I just don't see it happening the way he would like it to.
