While talking about a couple of the NFL’s top playmakers during a Wednesday conference call at Valley Ranch, Schwartz spoke highly of Bryant’s growth as a player.
“Both are great players,” Schwartz said. “And I think that Dez Bryant in particular has really improved over the course of his career. We saw him as a really young player a few years ago. He’s playing like a veteran player now. He’s taken the load of the No. 1 receiver. That’s a big burden to be the No. 1 receiver. You’re going to see attention every week. You’re going to see double teams. You’re going to see corners rolled to your side and it’s a big mental adjustment to go through that and I think that Dez Bryant has done that. He’s made big plays for them. He’s always been a really strong player, but you just see him maturing as a player and I think that’s good for the NFL when you see young players improve like he has.
“He’s one of the best receivers in the NFL as is Calvin and I think that’s about the only comparison that you need to make between those two guys. Every player is different. Every player has things that they do well and things they do well within the scheme and things like that. And we’re going to have our hands full getting Dez Bryant stopped and I’m sure Dallas is working really hard to find a way to get Calvin stopped.”
Here are some other topics Schwartz discussed during his conference call.
On Ndamukong Suh’s national reputation:
“I really don’t know. It really doesn’t matter to us. We try to play as hard and as tough and as physical as we can and what people say, I mean part of this business now, there’s going to be opinions, there’s going to be people talking and there’s great interest in this league but if you concern yourself with what people are saying or what your reputation is, then you’re concerned about the wrong thing. … You can’t worry about all the other stuff that goes along with this now. It’s part of the business. He’s a high profile player. There’s going to be scrutiny always on high profile players but just got to worry about your play on the field and he’s played very well for us this year. He’s made an out impact and his impact goes beyond the statistics. I think it’s been three interceptions that’s been directly as a result of pressure that he’s put on the quarterback where a quarterback has thrown the ball away and we’ve intercepted it. He gets double teams. It changes the defense for other guys. He’s had an impact every single week. He’s been very consistent this year and we’re glad to have him playing defense for us.”

Schwartz praised Romo, but also complimented the team’s other offensive weapons.
“I think he’s playing outstanding football,” Schwartz said of Romo. “Any time you have a quarterback rating over 100, you’re doing something right. You’re throwing touchdown passes, you’re avoiding interceptions. He’s done that. They got some good playmakers around him. [Jason] Witten has always been his go-to guy. Their careers have sort of been right next to each other. Witten’s an outstanding tight end.
“I think they’ve added some playmakers there at tight end. [Gavin] Escobar has done some nice things for them. Wide receiver-wise I think they’ve really built their depth. Terrance Williams has made some plays, Miles Austin is a proven player. Even some of the other guys have stepped in and really made plays, given him a lot of targets. When they can run the ball – when [DeMarco] Murray’s been healthy – that’s been a big difference for them also. It’s not just about Romo. He’s got plenty of playmakers that he can just get the ball to. I think that’s made a difference for him.”
Here are some other Cowboys-related comments Schwartz shared during his conference call.
On what he thought when he heard Monte Kiffin was coming back to the NFL:
“Twenty years ago, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers may have been the only team that was running that Tampa-2 coverage and that Tampa-2 scheme and now there’s 32 teams that will have that in their coverage at some point … so that legacy has lasted for him. He’s been an outstanding coordinator wherever he’s been. They played a really good game last week against the Eagles, only giving up three points and picking off a bunch of passes. He’s certainly one of the greatest coordinators in history. It’s good to have him back in the NFL. He’s going to make life tough on our offense. We’re going to have to play our very best to stay one move ahead of a very good defensive coordinator.”
