Huge difference from AOA, this guy was a running back and is very physical. AOA was a corner/safety and more a long, lean athlete. This guy will come up and likes to hit.

Henderson said on the radio tonight that they don't expect him to start right away anyway. They all loved the pick though. (Yes, coaches always say that but you can tell sometimes they mean it more than others.)

That's the problem with this organization.

Why does a club with so many holes, so many needs, constantly think they can get by with taking backups year after year? We do a better job of replacing our backups than we do of replacing our starters.

You're not going to find starters in every round of the draft. You will be lucky to find 2-3. And the Cowboys never said he wouldn't be a starter. They just don't expect it to happen right away.

Seems to me this player is one of the ones we typically bust on — lots of potential, but might never live up to it.

Of course, maybe we've actually got secondary coaches who can develop that potential now.

I think the first three picks are players who will definitely contribute at their position, while Wilcox could join the Jason Williams and AOAs of the Cowboys' world and be nothing more than a backup they don't want to play except on special teams.

Hope that isn't the case, of course.

I'm not sold on Wilcox...I haven't been a big Matt Johnson fan but considering he at least seems to have the pedigree and experience, I'd say the starting job is still his to lose as long as he stays healthy.

It's too bad, this is why I wanted the Top-5 safety prospect in Cyprien with our 1st rounder because safety is the one position where there is a gap between the elite/starter prospects and the projects/ST contributors you find later on. I'd say on the average, once you get past the 45th pick, that's the cut off on the elite safety prospects.

Wilcox is a great athlete but I don't think we will see the rewards for a couple of years. He will get in some plays here and there, but I expect Church and the great Matt Johnson to start. This is the only position that concerns me now. The O-line got better and they should sign a FA soon to strengthen it, I hope.

This is the only one that concerns you? Wow, you should be happy with that. :laugh2:

Yea, kind of came out wrong. I think the DL has one more year until it really needs addressed and I am assuming the OL gets a little more attention. That leaves(theoretically) one position that needs help, safety.

There were too many holes to fill all in one draft, but safety is still a question mark. The DL is thin but not like safety IMO.

And you're also not going to find starters if you intentionally draft guys to be backups.

You guys should research before you speak - Jerry said that any 3rd rounder is expected to be a starter, they expect Wilcox to be a starter. When? They have to see what he can do currently and go from there as he only has 1 year of experience at safety.

They aren't 'drafting backups.' That strategy Jones used in the late 90s was about finding guys that were going to backup established starters. There was never intent of them starting at any point. Scifres WOOHOO!!!

Just because they are not coutning on him as a guaranteed starter does not mean they don't intend to let him compete for a starting job. They have said that he will. It's a third round pick though.
