How long before Matt Jones becomes a Cowboy?

I say the over and under is two weeks.

Jacksonville released Matt Jones, who has had all sorts of off-the-field issues, this morning. Anyone who has followed the Cowboys knows Jerry Jones has a huge man crush on the former Arkansas receiver.

Jones, a former quarterback at Arkansas, is the epitome of a first-round bust. He's a fantastic athlete but has never been a real difference-maker at receiver.

He caught 65 passes for 761 yards and two touchdowns last season before being suspended for the final three games of the season for violating the league's substance abuse policy.

But the Cowboys might be willing to take a chance on him. What am I saying?

You know Jerry will take a chance on him. If Jerry had T.O., Pacman Jones and overrated Tank Johnson on the team last year, you better believe he'll add Jones to the roster if he can.

After all, he signed gun-toting Gerald Sensabaugh last week to play safety.

Whatever Jones' flaws, he can run. He had 13 catches of more than 20 yards in 2007. Without T.O., we all know Miles Austin is the only receiver with speed on the roster.

Adding Jones would give the Cowboys another player who can stretch the
field.

Hard to stretch the field in a prison cell...Jerrah has enough problems, I doubt he will be able to talk anyone into wanting to bring this PR nightmare on...

I hate to say it, but I will not be surprised if Jerry signs him.

Jerrys reason, the "need" for a "vet" WR. And he will be happy if he can sign him to a contract like Pacman got. So no loss if he has to be cut.

Matt Jones is a FA

As much as Jerry Jones loves his Hogs, it's best he stay away from the most recent ex-Hog who hit the street today.

Former Arkansas quarterback turned Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Matt Jones was cut on Monday, the team announced.

He had been charged with cocaine possession back in July; he was suspended for the final three games of the 2008 season for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. He is scheduled to appear in court on April 13.
Texans Longhorn fans remember Jones as the elusive, talented QB for Arkansas who gave the fighting Mack Brown's fits in Austin.

The NFL people fell in love with Jones because he's 6-foot-6, 218 pounds, athletic and could run. He was moved to receiver before the draft in 2005. But the talent and the frame never did match the production.

In 54 games with the Jags, Jones caught 166 passes for 2,153 yards and 15 touchdowns.

If Jones had been cut one year ago, when the Cowboys were taking "calculated risks" on Pacman Jones, Tank Johnson and others, I would have said the team would have rolled the dice on Matt Jones, too.

Now, given how the team has cleaned house and suddenly become tough on crime, I would be floored to see Jones given a shot by the Cowboys ... even though Jerry loves his Hogs.

Don't Even Think Twice Over Matt Jones

Posted by mickshot at 3/16/2009 3:47 PM CDT on truebluefanclub.com

Now before you even ask, just stop to think for one moment, and then consider the Cowboys decided to cut ties with Terrell Owens, Pacman Jones and apparently Tank Johnson, an unrestricted free agent they have shown no inclination in re-signing, obviously doing what they can to rid themselves of headaches.

So why in the world would they be interested in wide receiver Matt Jones, released on Monday by the Jacksonville Jaguars in yet another example of NFL teams not wanting to be held hostage by troubled and socially undisciplined players? Even for a one-year, minimum look-see?

Sure Jones led the Jaguars in receiving last year – for whatever that’s worth – catching a team-leading 65 passes for 761 yards in 13 games. But he wasn’t’ available for the final three games, getting hit with a three-game NFL suspension after agreeing in September to enter a drug rehabilitation program to offset the felony charge for possession of cocaine from last July in Fayetteville, Ark. Jones was placed on probation, but part of his agreement called for him not to drink alcohol or use drugs.

But Jones recently violated those terms of his probation by failing a recent screening test and spending the previous week in jail before admitting to a judge he drank a few beers after playing golf. The Jaguars waited until he was released from jail on Saturday and had returned to Jacksonville for a face-to-face meeting before officially announcing his release Monday morning.

“I was definitely shocked,” Jacksonville quarterback David Garrard told the Jaguars official team website. “There are business decisions that have to be made and they’re made. We support Matt as a person. We are here and getting ready to start the 2009 season, starting our weight program. We just have to move forward.”

And now they do so, not having to hold their breath, wondering if a guy they are counting on costs the team by having a bad night. Just consider before promoting the Cowboys signing this guy: Jones knew the rules of his probation, he knows he's going to be screened regularly, yet he still decided to have that beer, once again playing Russian Roulette with his career.

Exactly why Jerry will think about signing him. his last three project players failed. Blind squirrel syndrome haunts Jerry.

My guess is that Jerry and Mick have talked about this. Otherwise, there is no way he writes this article and makes Jones look bad if he signs him.

Found this on YouTube. It's long and a little boring at times, but it shows him showing up to drug court in tennis shoes with his mom and dad (who didn't know to tuck his shirt in). This is before the latest hearing.

I admit... I wouldn't be totally shocked if we sign him to a Pacman-like contract...

I give it 50/50...

How is 1 arrest for cocaine possession and then violating the conditions of drug court "all sorts of off-the-field issues?"
