Robert Griffin III isn't a good fit as backup QB in Dallas

IRVING, Texas -- Finally, most of you have come to the conclusion that the Dallas Cowboys aren't going to sign quarterback Johnny Manziel whenever the Cleveland Browns release him.

Now, you're focused on Washington Commanders quarterback Robert Griffin III, who probably will be traded or released this offseason. Guess what? He ain't joining the Cowboys to be Tony Romo's backup either.

And cost has nothing to do with it. Griffin isn't going to command big dollars. But whatever he wants, the Cowboys won't be interested in paying it.

Romo, who will be 36 when next season begins, remains the Cowboys' quarterback for the foreseeable future, but after breaking his collarbone twice last season and sitting out 12 games, the Cowboys need a viable backup.

Griffin isn't the answer. In December, one member of the Cowboys' front office said Griffin was an even worse fit in the Cowboys' offense than Manziel.

I really don't think RG3 would be a good fit. I may be wrong but I got the idea that during his time in was many of his own teammates didn't care for him too much. That speaks volumes to me not to mention the last time he looked any good was when the team leaned on the run game with Morris. We don't lean on the run game to protect a wounded Romo what makes anyone think we'd do it for RG3?

I agree but he is a better fit here than he is in Washington.

What I would like to see with Griffin if he was signed here is a different gameplan in the same offense that we currently run.

More playaction, especially bootlegs, from the pass game and continue to use our zone blocking in the running game.

What we need is a playmaker and I think he can still be that.

What we can't have is a guy that just runs the system as is and expect to win the game with talent alone.

I prefer a QB that can really run and make plays outside of the system and I think Griffin can do some of that.

How is he better in Dallas than Washington?

Gruden runs a good deal of timing based passing, so does Linehan. To me, if he was a bad fit in Washington, that carries over to Dallas.

Well let's be honest. No one is a good fit in this offense aside from Romo. So may be while we are looking for a backup QB we need to be looking for a new scheme and playbook as well?

Excellent point, old fellow!
I knew that one day you would! Carry on, mate.

I could see him in philly or houston.

I could see him unemployed. But wearing killer socks.

Because Griffin is a downfield thrower and Gruden is dinking and dunking.

Dallas does a lot of stuff downfield.. Where I think Griffin would struggle here is with getting the ball to the receiver on timing routes but I think Griffin can improvise and even Romo has to improvise a lot of what we do anyway.

I think the guy is a Ram or a Bronco anyways so this discussion doesn't matter.

Yeah, this is Football 101 type stuff. You can not drastically alter your offense for a backup QB.

The one thing this doesn't take into account though is the Garrett/Wilson factor. Which may be the exception to every offensive rule.

I literally stopped reading at "probably will be traded."

Unless he went on to dateline that article April 1, I refuse to read any drivel that actually takes into account a realistic possibility of Washington moving that huge 5th year contract. RGIII's family holding a winning Powerball ticket wouldn't even trade for him at that price.

Mike Shanah is a shell of his former self. Him not being able to fix anyone has to do with the game passing him by.

LOL! What? I am pretty sure he still knows a thing or two about QB play. I stand by what I said. Your post isnt particularly well reasoned. LOL! Yep Shanny lost it. Keep those posts coming.

The guy who committed one of the worst trades in NFL history for RGIII? And in the same draft went and drafted Kirk Cousins so essentially used 2 1st round picks, 2nd round pick and a 4th round pick to find a quarterback lol? That's your idea of knowing quarterbacks?

The only guy who made Bob look like an NFL QB for a season, yup that guy. Keep digging that hole.

Good. Draft your next QB at #4 and don't look back.

I'm hoping Stephen Jones sees this because I don't think Jerry does. You draft the best QB available at #4 and he has some time still to learn behind Romo and hence has the best chance for success. Romo learned from Vinny Testaverde and Drew Bledsoe. I think Jerry is thinking in terms of drafting the best defensive player, but I hope Stephen talks him out of it.

We've been calling for types of plays for as long as Garrett has been OC. I doubt that Garrett will modify the offense just to suite the needs of one player.
