Joe DeCamillis studied Tony Romo's holds from 2006

On the plane ride home from Newark, N.J., Tony Romo talked with special teams coach Joe DeCamillis about being the holder after some of the miscues that has played the kicking unit in recent weeks.

DeCamillis said he studied all of Romo's holds in the 2006 season before they worked on it Wednesday.

"He's very natural with his hands and he's an upright target, so [snapper L.P. Ladouceur] can look back and there's a big target to hit," DeCamillis said. "He's very smooth and to be honest with you it doesn't shock me one bit but it really was his idea. It wasn't my idea. We talked about it but this shows me what a competitor he is and how much he wants to help the team win because he had a bad experience and he really wants to help us out. That's a real pro to me. That's a huge boost, in my opinion, of him not that he needed one but he got one from me."

In his 20 years as a special teams coach DeCamillis has never used his starting quarterback as the holder before.

"I think most of the time the punter's there and they get most of the reps so if you have that guy you'd like to be able to do that because you get more reps with him," DeCamillis said. "There's more time obviously. It's not like that all over the league, but there's one in Green Bay we played earlier and the backup quarterback is the holder."

Nick Folk did not miss any of the kicks with Romo as his holder Thursday that we saw during the portion of practice that was open to the media at Cowboys Stadium.

It should be interesting to see how romos pregame changes. He is usually throwing and getting loose then goes to the locker room before coming out in uniform for official warmups.

Usually the kicking unit of lp, folk, buehler and mcbriar are out there the whole time..

And there are people out there and wonder if Romo is a leader.

I tried to tell people earlier when i posted about elite QB's that after their 50th start to their 61st start, they generally stepped up and became elite QB's and leaders on the team.

Maybe now some people will believe me when I tell them some things I see and know. Granted now and then I am wrong, but most of the time I am right.

I have been watching the Dallas Cowboys since 1966. I know what I am seeing, its in my blood and my heart.

I've been keeping your "50th start" thing in the back of my mind ever since you posted about it a while back. I was neither a doubter nor a believer per se at the time - just intrigued. You might have been on to something. I feel like a lightbulb went off for Romo. He has really looked and played like a confident leader lately. I hope the rest of the team steps it up like he has.

You watch more live pre-game than probably anyone else here, so you'd be the one to know... but I thought that the kickers usually practiced their pre-game field goals with those little holder thingys rather than with a live human holder.

Am I mistaken here?

Yeah they do, but that is really early. once it gets about 2 hours before kickoff I see the whole unit out there.

Now, it really shouldnt be different for folk, because mcbriar is always off punting anyway. But at that certain point where romo is out there warming up with the wr and the team, those guys are kicking as a unit...

so it will be interesting to see, Romo cant be in two places at once!!

for instance here is folk and mcbriar about an hour and a half or so before kickoff.

this is about 10 minutes later.....
http://img69.*************/img69/7258/raidersatdallasturkeydat.jpg

so on one part of the field the qbs are getting loose, on the other side the kicking units are kicking field goals.

But you are right, really early about 2 or 3 hours early they kick with the tee's.

I am looking forward to seeing what happens.

Folk is looking kind of fatty

I've pinpointed the problem!

You know on a serious note, When I relistened to the cowboys-giants radiocall from september Early in the game brad sham mentioned that when he talked to nick folk about the new stadium, folk said he didnt like the turf.

He commented that it was loose and he didnt feel comfortable on it and that the turf at texas stadium was hard and packed down and he loved it.

Now that doesnt matter when we are on the road but, it may mean something at home.

Theebs, how many times do they practice as a unit? How many kicks total?

I can't imagine in a whole three hour warm up that they couldn't find a time to let them warm up separately. Curious as well, though, to see how it works.

not sure that is a good question though.

I think if I remember correctly, folk, lp and mcbriar start at the 25 or 30 and go all the way back to the 45 or 50 on each side of the field. I think they do it in increments of 5 yards.

I imagine they will work it out, it does seem pretty hairy though.

folk kicks a ton with the tee so it wont be a matter of being loose at least!

Romo volunteered because he is tired of watching Shankapotamus miss kick after kick after kick.

Call me a skeptic, I just cant believe that the problem this whole time has been McBriar. If McBriar was not placing the ball down at the right spot because he was "lunging" or whatever the hell he said he was doing........nobody thought about making a change until the final 4 games of the season???

I want to see what happens when Shankapotamus misses another kick and points at Romo. I bet Romo ***** slaps him across the field.

I'm all for the idea, but I do have one concern.

Lets say that during a game, Romo gets mildly injured. Say, another knee to the back like against the Commanders. A sack on third down, when were in field goal range.

1. If he's treated by the trainers, he has to miss a play, so we'd need someone else to hold.

2. If he doesn't get treated by the trainers, but the injury causes enough pain that it throws off his hold slightly.

I love that Romo is stepping up, but I really wish we didn't have to rely on him.

I think it is way beyond ridiculous that we have to resort to our star QB to hold field goals.

I think it is way beyond ridiculous to care. I'd love to see Witten, Crayton, or anyone do it. If Tony is the best at it on the team and it restores some potency to our kicking game then so the hell what.

And I would like to know what you'll all have to say if he does a complete turnaround and hits every (or nearly) one of them for the rest of the season.

Probably not much.
