Sources: Falcons reach deal with ex-Saints WR Horn

Atlanta's young and underachieving receiving corps has a leader. More important, the Falcons have fetched Michael Vick another dependable target.

Former Saints receiver Joe Horn, released last week by New Orleans, agreed Wednesday to sign with the rival Falcons, according to team sources. Terms of the contract, which was being finalized, were not immediately available.

Horn began his visit with the Falcons on Monday night and never left, deciding not to visit Green Bay or Jacksonville, who also were interested in the services of the 35-year-old wideout, who has 576 receptions, 8,501 yards and 57 touchdowns in 11 seasons with Kansas City and New Orleans.

Horn, a four-time Pro Bowl selection who served as the voice of the Saints' franchise -- and, to some extent, the Gulf South region -- during a 2005 season ruined by Hurricane Katrina, posted four 1,000-yard seasons with the Saints. But he's had only five touchdown catches the past two seasons and missed six games last year due to injury.

The chance to face the Saints twice a season and remain close to New Orleans presumably played a part in Horn's decision to sign with the Falcons, along with the prospect of playing with Vick in new head coach Bobby Petrino and offensive coordinator Hugh Jackson's system.

The Saints deemed Horn expendable largely because of the emergence last season of rookie Marques Colston and former second-round pick Devery Henderson. In Atlanta, Horn immediately vaults to the top of a receiver depth chart that includes former first-round picks Michael Jenkins and Roddy White, who will no doubt benefit from a mentor as experienced and accomplished as Horn.

They could have TO, Steve Smith, and Chad Johnson and it wouldnt matter.

Its going to be Vick to Crumpler or take off running.

Good pick up.....very good pick up. A WR in Atlanta that has hands.

Now I guess he only has to stay healthy. Didn't he fail his physical with NO just a couple weeks ago?

It would matter. Now would it matter enough to make them SB contenders is another question. The receivers in Atlanta last season were horrible. Vick dioes not do enough to help them, but they just are not that good. Obviously, someone with talent can get something accomplished with Vick throwing the ball. That is why Crumpler does well, but if Vick had someone like David Lafleur at tight end, the Falcons would have no passing game.

Joe Horn is just going to be another reciever that Ron Mexico will not even look at...and when he does throw the occasional pass it will either be over his head or at his feet...or, Ron Mexico will take off running like he's trying to cross the border into the USA!

IMO, fans shouldn't like it.

The NFL could and should tweak the salary cap rules in such a way as to provide an incentive to teams for keeping their long-time local fan favorites like Joe Horn (in New Orleans) or Adam Timmerman (in St. Louis).

Free agency and the salary cap don't have to ignore the player X team connections.

I like this move by the Falcons.

They need an older vet to show the youngins how to runa pattern and catch a ball.

Hey another wideout Vick can throw bullets at the ankles of and the entire free world swear it's anyone but the QB's fault when he drops it.
