When players are picked high in the first round (Elliott may go more toward the mid first round), the expectation is that they are franchise cornerstone players. If you're an NFL team about to pay a kid $5M/year to play football, you're not only counting on them to play at an elite level, but you're expecting them to be a face (if not THE face) of your franchise and to be available for 16 games. The only reason they shouldn't play every game is if they are injured (or in the case of QB's, being developed for the future). Nope, if they're willing to fart around with party drugs while knowing the consequences of getting caught, then I'm not going to pin my franchise's future on them and I'm not going to use a good chunk of my limited salary cap on them, either. Now get them outside of round one and I'll recalculate the risk/reward. The argument that party drug use is excusable if you're a college kid holds a little more water if you're an average college kid going into an average job market ($40-60K/yr), but when you're being paid roughly $5M/year, then the expectations on many fronts are quite different. That's just my humble, amateur opinion of the situation.
Well said. I fully agree.
