From the Article below, it's clear why he was released... he was unhappy and it was affecting his play.

Hopefully, if we do give him a chance, he'll have his head on straight. If Parcells can get him to focus, then he can contribute, if he can't focus, then he won't see the field.

** I have no idea if we're claiming him... it was just inferred from today's press conference. **

Packers waive second-year cornerback Joey Thomas

ARNIE STAPLETON

Associated Press

GREEN BAY, Wis. - Joey Thomas got his wish. He'll be nowhere near the Green Bay Packers bench anymore.

The second-year cornerback won't be in their nickel package, either. He was waived on Wednesday. Nobody involved would reveal specifics about the breakup, although it was clear the Packers' patience had worn thin after his gaffes in the last two games played big roles in losses at Minnesota and Cincinnati.

And Thomas drew the organization's ire for angrily criticizing his benching against the Bengals just a week after he inexplicably allowed wide receiver Marcus Robinson to get out of bounds with 2 seconds and no timeouts remaining, setting up the thankful Vikings for a 56-yard winning field goal.

Thomas, who entered training camp as a starter ahead of Ahmad Carroll, fell even further down the depth chart Sunday. He allowed Cincinnati to continue on a touchdown drive when he fell to the turf on a key third-down play and drew a flag for illegal hands to the face. He was replaced by rookie Mike Hawkins.

Asked afterward if he deserved to be benched, he angrily retorted: "Hell no."

Coach Mike Sherman said that wasn't the reason for his dismissal.

"He was not let go because of that comment, but it was revealing of some things," Sherman said.

Asked how a third-round pick could fall so far so fast, Sherman said: "I don't know. You've got to be accountable and honest about what you're doing and how you're doing it."

Thomas told The Associated Press he wasn't bitter, welcomed a fresh start somewhere else and had a good exit interview with Sherman.

"That was beneficial to me as a player and person. Sherman's a good dude. He's a good man with a good heart. I appreciate the conversation he had with me," Thomas said in a phone conversation several hours after his dismissal.

He said he had a good idea why he was released, but didn't ask Sherman for specifics.

"It's more about they LET me go," Thomas said. "You could say it was X, Y, Z or because the stars are purple. But the fact is I was let go and I'm not a member of the Green Bay Packers anymore and I have to move forward."

Carroll said he was surprised by Thomas' exit: "I'm sure he'll get picked up real quick, though."

That was a sentiment shared across the locker room and by his position coach, Lionel Washington, who said he just needs more consistency.

"I don't expect him to be jobless very long," linebacker Na'il Diggs said.

Sherman, however, said Thomas has yet to prove he's an NFL-caliber player.

Thomas actually entered camp as the starter after a solid offseason, but nagging leg injuries forced him to miss several weeks and allowed Carroll, whom he pummeled in a fistfight last year, to win back his starting job.

The two flip-flopped again in Week 2 after Carroll committed several penalties in the opener but again Thomas got hurt and Carroll went back into the lineup. When he got healthy again, Thomas was relegated to nickel back status.

"Joey is a heck of a nice young man and a gifted athlete," general manager Ted Thompson said. "I'm sure he wishes he'd have played a little better. I'm sure he has some issues with us, as well. It just didn't work out as well as it should have."

The Packers claimed defensive back Jeremy Thornburg off waivers from San Francisco to replace Thomas on their 53-man roster.

"When you're 1-6, there's bound to be changes that happen. Someone's going to get cut," linebacker Nick Barnett said. "No one's safe. This is the NFL."

Thomas was getting dressed for the team's afternoon practice when he was told of his release.

"I just want to say that I'm not bitter toward the Packers," he said. "I appreciate Green Bay because they did draft me and I'm grateful for the opportunity to play in this league. Things didn't work out. There's no bad blood toward the organization.

"This definitely gives me a fresh start."

Here are a couple of things WastedFluid found at a Packers board:

Quote:
The reports outta college were that he was "uncoachable" and had an attitude problem. trannsferred from Washington to Montana because he didn't want to play saftey!

This is ANOTHER ONE OF SHERMANS DRAFT/PERSONAL MISTAKES!!!!

@#%$, that sucks.
They should have sent Carroll with him so they could duke it out in the parking lot! I won't miss Thomas, even though I still feel he was better than Carroll.

My guess is that Thomas didn't take to the yelling at him on the sidelines we've been seeing recently.

Like I said in another thread, these guys had to be a bit "jumpy" over it, and prone to making mistakes.

That still doesn't excuse Carroll's lack of improvement.

has he played a single down as a safety?

from reports I had always read on him, tackling was an issue...if he cant tackle, he cant play safety...especially here

also sounds like the guy has a major attitude problem

Would you be happy playing behind someone who a) beat you up and b) was starting because of his high pick status rather than performance?

Danny, do you know what exactly Parcells said that's led some people to believe they're considering Thomas? Couldn't find it in Inman Roshi's PC recap.

The two Pack fans I work with are stunned that Carroll didn't get released before Thomas, as they feel Batman is the bigger liability/bust. All I know is that we were very high on this guy before that draft. Thomas was pressed into a starting role due to injuries last year and could thrive playing with our vets. Parcells just mentioned how much Newman has benefitted from Glenn's influence off the field and we know what Henry has done for him on the field.
I think this would be a perfect situation to develop a talented prospect who has just been humbled a bit.

Unless someone beats us to the punch, I think we're gonna sign him.

Parcells said in the press conference that if Pile came out OK then they were too deep at safety and might do something. Said it was too soon to tell on Henry. No mention of any CB activity.

I revise my arguement.

How could Thomas be happy starting behind someone when prison rules suggest that not only should he be starting but Carroll should be, well, let's say subservient to him?

BP said something to the effect of -- yesterday something happened with Jerry and we were very much on the same page. What time is it, 2:00 -- we'll see.

It sounded like a waiver claim reference to me.

Interesting quotes from the packers board. I can see how being 1-6 and everyplayer dancing on glass would make you more prone to thinking about being perfect then reacting and playing. Maybe its truely a change of scenery needed and an atmosphere where its conducive to actually playing again.

I dont think one minor bad attitude would do a lot of damage and with our vets, we wont need Parcells to straighten him out, imagine Dan Campbell walking in and hes kicked back in a recliner with head phones on when he should be lifting or reading his playbook. The players would straighten him out. Plus I think the packers coach told him to straighten his crap out and lose the attitude for his next gig, or it could be the last in the pros.

I dont think he would be a problem for his next team as he is a nobody really and they dont get many chances. And in a winning attitude and locker room, you cant help but wanna join your brothers in the pain to enjoy all that glory.

I say seriously look at him, if hes better then Dixon or Scott, done deal. Though from reading about him, he sounds like hes better then both put together and a little Nate Jones as well.

I agree. I'll be shocked if he falls to us but I'm hoping...

they'd be happy if that was all the help they needed. their high point this season might end up being almost beating us.

Of course, now someone has to be cut off a very deep Saints roster. Maybe we can claim that guy.
