It is hard for me to articulate the feelings I have over this news. If you are like me and you were a child in the 60s, John Glenn and all of the early Astronauts were more then just that. They were heroes beyond all else and John Glenn was the most heroic of them all.

Glenn was larger then life. War Hero, Fighter Pilot in the Pacific and Korea, Test Pilot, Egineer, Astronaut, Senator, Husband, Father, Grandfather and a True American Hero.

RIP John Herschel Glenn Jr.
Born: July 18, 1921 – Died : December 8, 2016

Wow, sad news. I went to John Glenn middle school as a kid. I'm sure most have seen the movie, but The Right Stuff is a fantastic movie documenting the Project Mercury space program and the book by Tom Wolfe is even better. I think that Glenn was the last of the original Mercury 7. Some of the bravest men to ever walk the earth as far as I'm concerned. Here, sit on this gigantic rocket and lets see what happens! Unfortunately Yeager (who broke the sound barrier again at age 89) probably isn't far behind him. Those were men!

The men and women of yesteryear were a special breed of tough and durable. They could survive anything. And they did.

RIP Mr. Glenn.

Godspeed into the heavens and the stars
You so mightily sought
And may you have peace from the brutal wars of man
In which you fought.

They do. I served with many. I'll give you one example, bro -- Our medic (Paulino) had his achilles' tendon blown out from a vbied and performed first aid on us. His ankle shredded. 11 people suffering various wounds, a KIA (Adrian Orosco, RIP). He (Paulino) got his Bronze Star w Valor. It was kicked down from a Silver Star (should have been Silver).

Don't think like that. I'm sick of it (not necessarily at you, LZ), this millennial/younger gen is "not like they made them" bs. It disgusts me. Got into a verbal, almost physical fight at the Loma Linda VA with some Vietnam vet trying to tell me I fought in a fake war. When I lifted up my pant leg he got quiet real fast, yet I still wanted to choke him out.

Let's celebrate him (Glenn) without denigrating the younger generations. Unless you know something I don't? It's disrespectful.

RIP John Glenn. You National Treasure. You hero. True American.

No disrespect was meant, and I am sure there still is, it just seems that you don't hear about them as much. Seems like all the snowflakes and the safety pin wearers get most of the airtime. What branch were you in?

Army. My unit/MOS is in my profile.

I know you meant no disrespect, LZ.

There's a future generation of folk who are gonna carry the torch for this Nation.

Maybe we won't be John Glenn's, but who the hell is? :)

Just wanted to let you know, there's plenty of young, go-getters out there. Not all of us are sucking our Nation dry. I won't get political, so I'll leave it there.

My attitude towards that sentiment is how can you claim that to me without walking in my shoes. It also shows ignorance. People look at overall numbers, but assault infantry units in Anbar during 2004/2005 got hit HARD. We eclipsed a 30% causalty rate in Fallujah, and Im sure the other units in the Op were comparable. The units that took part in the early Fallujah Op as well as the Ramadi Op were well over 25%.

When a dude a worked with talked about the numbers, I'm just told him my unit had the same casualty rate as Shiloh
