John Lynch was a nobody before Kiffen

When Monte Kiffin arrived in Tampa, John Lynch had been there three years and started six games. Lynch was a scrub basically, then Kiffen made him a star.

Plus, Lynch played with a list of average safeties alongside during that span.

Maybe Kiffen doesn't need stars at safety to run his scheme after all.

Don't be ridiculous. All coaches need players.

do we know if john lynch had heart? determination? maybe when asked to rise to the challenge he did, lets not forget what was in the heart of the dog in teh fight.

its nice if Kiffen can turn players into better players, and its nice to speculate on it, but for all we know Lynch might have just needed a better system. What we do know is that Lynch had a good career and Kiffen was there to set him on a better path.

Aoparently, you missed the point. Lynch wasn't much of a player until Kiffen showed up. Then he became a pro bowler.

Maybe Church, Johnson, or Wilcox could do the same.

Question. Why attribute Lynch getting better to Kiffin? Players can take individual strides too, you know.

Lynch had less than 1 sack a year, about 1 FF per year and less than 2 INTs a year. His speed was avg at best around mid 4.6. He was a huge hitter and to me that was about it. He wouldn't be a very good safety in the NFL now IMO. While I'd love to have a 9 time Pro Bowler I'd want a better player than Lynch.

Hum, is it possible that Lynch worked hard in the weight room for 3 years.....learned from the Vets in front of him........learned how to study film.....and the lights came on finally?

Not trying to take away from Kiffin, I just believe that some players it takes a little time to click in the NFL.

I was trying to CREDIT Kiffin, and the scheme. Great defenses with Lynch and a bunch of spare part safeties those years.

Jerry said that Kiffin told him he didn't need star safeties in his scheme

I believe him. I think the DBs have to tackle well.

It always helps, but I believe Kiffin's scheme is designed to cover up coverage issues for the defensive backs.

I think it's more important in this scheme that you have do-everything linebackers who can get back into zones and limit the throwing windows.

If the linebackers aren't deployed in coverage as much, then the safeties and corners have to cover more ground. This scheme puts more emphasis on the DBs' ability to assist with the run than on their ability to run because with the linebackers in coverage and the line hard-charging into the backfield, everyone outside of the front four has to recognize run and come up and play it well for the scheme to work right.

It is true that Kiffin's scheme is easy for safeties to play good in. Not a lot of thinking, just doing.

Wilcox, Johnson and Church are all plenty talented to become very good players in this defense. Wilcox and Johnson in particular could become enforcers in the secondary.

So much has to do with scheme in the NFL. Get players in the right one and boom, they become stars.

Not saying that will happen for sure, but it certainly could... and it could happen very quickly.

It is no accident that Seattle's entire secondary seems like stars. They are talented enough... but they are put in excellent positions to succeed.

The OPs point is that Lynch had already had 3 years to prove himself, and he was just average until Kiffin arrived and then he became a star. Parcells has stated that whatever a player is after 3 years in the league, is all he'll ever be and won't get any better.

And the bears sent two cornerbacks to the pro bowl last year. I really expect improved secondary play this year. The talent is there and I thing the coaching will be good too.
