John Owning: If you want to get to know Jim Leonhard

Thanks for the post. Very informative, insightful.
Interestingly he mentions Rex Ryan at about the 26th minute

He is my preferred DC which means it’ll never happen
He’s mine as well.

I think they have an opportunity to hire him, but only if they’re bold and aggressive.

Denver’s current defensive coordinator Vance Joseph is getting interviews for head coaching positions again.

If he leaves, Leonard is his in-house successor.

But if Dallas should quickly hire him, it won’t matter what Joseph does.

My worry is that the Cowboys won’t act fast enough.

It's obvious, he's their first choice,

but they're not putting all their eggs in that basket in case he stays with Denver and it's smart but the other candidates are very similar Positional coaches used to be DCs in college ready to be the next really good NFL DC or at least a possibility of ,

I like these candidates better than the typical retread ex head coaches returning to be A DC again only to probably want to leave to be a head coach

I mean we've been seeing this vicious circle for a while.....

This is a refreshing first look at the initial candidates for interviews...

I think the irony here is you think that Jim is this naive that he doesn't know this that the Cowboys might try to rush him into a job all he has to do is say no if he's that gullible I don't think I want him as my coach he needs to be smart enough to take the interview but leave his options open because if that's really where he wants to be in Denver you are not going to trick him into the job...

I understand what you're saying but you probably need to look at it from a different viewpoint that would be his I think he's smart enough to know just like Brian Flores isn't going to jump at the first chance at signing a new deal with Minnesota or as another DC somewhere else before he sees the other offers he's not going to be tricked because if these guys are that easily tricked I don't want them here...LOL:muttley::huh::popcorn:

I think you’re misunderstanding my point.

I’m not trying to ‘trick’ anyone. If Leonard wants to wait and see what Joseph does, first, that’s his prerogative.

If that is the case, he may just turn down the opportunity to interview with Dallas.

But if he does interview and is offered the job, I don’t think he would turn it down to go back to wait-and-see behind Vance Joseph.

Conversely, if Dallas waits and Joseph gets another head coaching job, Leonard likely stays put and they have to look elsewhere.

What makes it obvious that it is their first choice?

They interviewed Saleh last year. Schottenheimer got hired.

Nothing tells me they would make this move.

Its far to proactive and smart for this FO.

I believe he would There's where we are not misunderstanding each other it's exactly what I read and I'm telling you he is not going to grasp the first offer that is not smart and I don't want to coach that's not smart...

His team's in the playoffs right now he does have a shot at being the next DC there He has no reason to rush this process nor does the Cowboys they need to do their interview They can talk numbers, but I don't think if he's offered a job that he's going to take it.

Well, you see these as desperate weak coaches that need to take the first offer, and that's not what interviews are about ,both sides need to listen to the pitch, and then you Mull it over....

I mean, it's nice that you think that that's what typically happens ,and it is not what happens this man is not coming to Dallas to do an interview or however, he did it through a zoom, and it's going to take the first offer, I just don't think he would...

I mean that would be great I mean it is their target, but you can't have all your eggs in one basket on either side.

BTW I didn't read how the interview worked but I think because they're in the playoffs I don't think he came to do a in person interview I don't think he was taking that right now,

I think you have to do it on zoom or whatever so it's not even the real serious one...

Some of these interviews with these guys that are on playoff teams are going to be a soft interview, it's going to gauge interest ,hear both sides, and then they'll get back to each other...

I mean this is the same thing that would happen with Brian Schottenheimer last year,

it took a second interview for him to convince the Cowboys he was the right man for the job they were not interested in him at first and the first interview was so good they offered him a second one the other ones obviously didn't blow them away like he did and I think sometimes it takes more than one.

Its not a worry......its a prediction.

But perhaps they'll break the mold and actually interview a coveted coach.
I hope so, my one glimmer of hope is that they were going to take weeks to fire Flus and then fired him the next day. Maybe JJ delayed his cruise to actually do some GM work.

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

A sure thing is better than a maybe.

Think back to Sean Payton, Denver’s current coach.

Way back when, he was the successor in Dallas to Bill Parcells. The job would eventually have been his. At one point, he turned down opportunities to stay in Dallas.

Eventually his patience ran out and he left for New Orleans and the rest is history.

Well my memory says it's the opposite, Bill Parcells never told Peyton, that he was going to leave sooner than later like all of a sudden up and quit,

if he had told Peyton that the job was about to come open just keep it to yourself gave him his intentions up front, sean Payton would have been our coach, and that's why I hate the quitter AKA Bill Parcells who didn't finish anything...

That's a whole different scenario here... It's OK we have a differing of opinions, I just don't think he's going to take the First offer and he shouldn't.

I don't think the Cowboys are the only ones looking to make him an offer That's where I'm getting my info I mean the guys already comfortable he might get that job he might not but he has other offers...

I mean why would you want the Cowboys to rush into this they need to see if their interview goes well the ideas, they have his personality like that's what you gauge during a interview...

Eventually his patience ran out and he left for New Orleans and the rest is history.
But Bill Parcells left the very next season That's the whole point bill Parcells just quit without letting his people know and I think he did it on purpose I think he pushed Peyton out because he didn't want Jerry to end up with him that's a whole different story...

Oh, I agree with you completely there.

Parcells screwed the Cowboys by not having a clear retirement and succession plan.

If he knew his plans sooner, he could have communicated them clearly, with the organization and Sean Payton.

But he didn’t have one, so the Cowboys first lost Payton, and were then blindsided by Parcells’ retirement.

He screwed them on that.
