I like Bennett's POTENTIAL but this Phillips kid.... Some are comparing him to Witten but let's have a reality check, he doesn't run as well as Jason did when he first came into the league. However he sure blocks, catches and does all the little things almost as well. One of the best late round picks since Jay Ratliff IMO....Mr. Bennett will probably be trade bait, but I would send him to the AFC where about ten teams will be drooling for this guy.

It all comes down to what our long term expectations are for Bennett. You don't trade a young, promising, cheap player if you feel he potentially could play a huge role for you. Learning curves are different for all players, and you never know when Bennett's a guy who will need longer for everything to click than Phillips. Depth is never a bad thing, and I like our three-person tight end tandem.

With that said, if Cincy is still interested in him for a high pick, maybe you consider it if you're suddenly doubting Bennett's purpose here. It's better to take a second round pick and spend it on a player who can challenge for a vital role than to keep a guy you don't know what to do with. And as the poster above said, for Bennett's lack of impact in catching passes, he's a damn good blocker and has sprung many a big play.

Cincy wanted to trade for a 4th and Chris Henry and Jerry countered with a 1st. Cincy scoffed.

Jerry's counter-offer should tell you all you need to know about what this franchise feels about Bennett.

That being said, we should be posting discussions about the Minnesota Vikings, not a backup tight end.

settle down francis. Phillips plays TE and so does Bennett: phillips is outplaying him and that's a fact. Sure Bennett blocks well, but that's what you draft and pay sixth rounders like PHILLIPS to do. Not a second round, overpaid and not so sure handed guy like Bennett. I stand by my first post: Phillips is beating him out and with Witten here a few more years, they should ship Bennett out while the shipping is good.

Yup. Phillips lines up almost exclusively at fullback, not TE.

His point is that Phillips isn't playing TE.

In 50 snaps in the last two games, he's lined up as a fullback 44 times and a TE 6 times. Once he replaced Witten, twice he replaced Bennett, twice was a 3-TE set, and on the 6th time we had no other TEs, which leads me to believe he was likely lined up as a FB and motioned out.

He's not taking time away from Bennett.

^ This kind of ends the thread, i think.

One addition to make: Some of the times he lined up at tight end probably came when Witten briefly sat out two or three plays last night. I believe on each and every play Bennett and Phillips were our tight ends.

This nailed it.

He had 32 snaps yesterday, and 27 of them were at fullback. The other 5 were at TE and Martellus was on the field for 3 of those plays.

I guess I could have just looked at the sheet. Once he replaced Witten, twice he replaced Bennett, twice was a 3-TE set, and on the 6th time we had no other TEs, which leads me to believe he was likely lined up as a FB and motioned out.

the numbers don't reflect it, but Bennett's been pretty darn good in both run blocking and pass protection.

He's almost like having a small OLineman outside of the LT

Phillips love.

He is Witten JR, I see play and play again when I catch myself screaming WITTEN YES **** YES@@, then I see the 89 and go, oh **** nice play by John Phillips.

Marty B. should be sent somewhere as trade bait.

I think he'd be an outstanding LT if he put on an extra 50 lbs.

You hush your mouth, darnit. He must be traded. Pronto! Forget next week's game.

:)

Nah, Bennett has a place on this team. I still have high hopes for him as a pass-catching threat as well, moving forward.

He reminds me more of David LaFleur, which is not the insult many on this board would have you believe it is.

Not at all, I see Witten Witten and more Witten in him, and isn't he a lil faster than Witten to? If so the potential is limitless. Jason Witten is a hall of fame Tight End, imagine someone just like him, but faster?
