War Room analysis
Strengths:
Has all the right tools: big, strong and athletic. Shows good speed; excels at using feet to set up in pass protection. Has a super-strong upper body and delivers good initial pop. Uses long arms to ride off defenders. Has the quickness and power to get to linebackers. Is smart and durable with great character.
Weaknesses: Needs to refine technique; sometimes overextends. Must improve recognition of blitzes. Would benefit from being more aggressive to finish blocks. Sometimes bends at the waist and leans a bit. Has trouble changing directions. Bottom line: Scott has the prototypical size, skills and experience to play an NFL anchor at either left or right tackle. He continued to develop as a senior, becoming a more complete player. He isn't among the elite in a deep tackle class but makes for a good third-round value.

Dan Pompei analysis
Is athletic with a lot of ability, but doesn't always show it. Is inconsistent. Lacks explosiveness, but can wall-off defenders. Shows the footwork to mirror and slide with pass rushers. Must be more consistent with technique. Is a little sluggish coming out of stance at times. Struggles against speed rushers. Must improve strength and killer instinct. Best football could be ahead of him

Yeah, he's probably worth a shot in the 3rd. Some of his issues are related to lack of strength (17 reps at 225 at the combine- sad), but that can be corrected if the guy wants to be good. He could be another tease like Mike Williams but if a coach could ever light a fire under his butt you might have something.

big difference between a tease at #4 overall and one in round 3. the round 3 guy knows he's got to work harder since he might just end up cut after a year

That's a pretty valid point.

I guess that's true. But for the most part I think guys are what they are. I think Scott might just need some added strength and coaching. But if he's just lazy, he's not likely to change into a gym rat no matter what his level of security.

Not to change subjects but that's why a guy like Gilles concerns me. By all reports he has a lot of talent, maybe more than any guard in the draft. But if you allow yourself to become a fat tub of goo in college, and you show up out of shape for the combine, what makes anyone think that story is going to change when you get the big pay day? Every case is different but to me you look at the guy's track record 1st. Scott has enough talent that you do your homework and if he looks like he really loves the game (I don't think Mike Williams does) then bring him on.

a. 2nd rounders -- which is where Giles goes -- don't get such a huge payday. their $$ come when they get to be free agents.

b. some folks said Rob Pettiti was a fat tub of goo in college. We've seen nothing but hard work out of him.

Rob is a good example of why you do your homework. BP knew Rob's dad. They also knew that Pitt kinda let their guys go their own way on workouts. But even with that I doubt we take a chance on Rob if it was a 1st day pick and not a 6th.

At the very least if a guy is heavy in college you pull out the old microscope and get some reasons for it. Gilles could be the next LA or he could be the next Fat Albert. Same with Scott. All I'm saying is do your homework.

a- Giles..interior OL's almost always poor use of early selections

b- hard work, and alot of sacks and negative runs allowed...just because somebody tries hard doesnt make them a good player
