Johnson, Chiefs work out five-year contract extension

Updated: August 21, 2007, 1:38 PM ET

Larry Johnson ended his 25-day holdout Tuesday morning by finalizing a five-year extension that will keep him with the Chiefs through 2012.

Financial terms of the deal weren't available, but ESPN.com's Michael Smith reported that the contract is worth $45 million, with $19 million is guaranteed. Of the guaranteed money, $12 million is the signing bonus and $7 million is guaranteed salary.

Both sides were working on the deal Monday night. The final holdup was the payout over the first three years of the contract. Once that was resolved, Johnson decided to report and accept the Chiefs' proposal.

Johnson reported to the practice field late Tuesday morning, put on his helmet and was ready for duty.

It was a tough situation for the Chiefs and Johnson. He turns 28 years old this fall. Because of that, Johnson didn't want to play out the final year of his current deal and be in a position in which the Chiefs could make him their franchise player in 2008. Had that happened, it would have been hard for Johnson to get a big-money contract, since running backs nearing the age of 30 tend to not get big deals.

For weeks, both sides had been chipping away and getting closer, but it was not close enough for Johnson to get the deal done in time to report to River Falls, Wis., where the Chiefs conducted their training camp. Camp broke last week and the team returned to Kansas City.

By reporting and getting his new contract, Johnson has two possible games to polish his timing for the start of the regular season. He had an NFL-record 416 carries last season, and even though the team is expected to lighten the load this year, Johnson is considered the workhorse of the offense.

Okay, so how long before Priest Holmes is waived?

I think he is Texans bound as soon as it happens.

Larry Johnson is going to get destroyed this year..The Chiefs will have no passing game at all and have taken serious hits on there offensive line in recent years.

I really wish we had the Chiefs number one pick this year instead of the Browns

I believe you are correct Hos, because I have read numerous reports that Priest wants one more big payday.......just wants to earn those big bucks closer to his San Antonio home.

Damn. I got him with the 6th overall and thought it was a steal.

I'm sure they'd trade it to us if we ask nicely.

L.J. GETS $13.5 MILLION TO SIGN

A league source tells us that the new contract between running back Larry Johnson and the Chiefs includes a $13.5 million signing bonus.

Jay Glazer of FOX reports that the total guaranteed money is $19 million, and that the six-year deal has a total value of $45 million.

Adam Schefter of NFL Network has the contract at $19 million guaranteed, $43.2 million total value, and $27.7 million over the first three years.

It remains to be seen whether the $45 million (or $43.2 million) is a realistic number, or whether it requires Johnson to do things like lead the league in rushing multiple times, win an MVP award, and/or dress in drag and do the hula.

UPDATE: Agent Alvin Keels tells us that the value of the five-year extension is $43.2 million, and that the total six-year value (including the old money) is $45 million.

Not me, I still like Browns chances of being another one of five worst teams in the league.

That is ridicilous. He went 3rd or 4th in all 4 leauges I drafted in. And here I thought I got a steal getting T. Henry with the 9th pick of the 2nd round, you just brought me back down to earth.

I wasn't the least bit upset. My pick took all of 2 seconds to spit out his name.
