DETROIT (AP) -- Matthew Stafford may drop back and loft a pass to Calvin Johnson for the last time at Ford Field against the San Francisco 49ers.

The Detroit Lions have invested a lot in Stafford and Johnson, banking on them being a winning combination. The floundering franchise hasn't gotten much of a return.

Sure, the superstar receiver and inconsistent quarterback have combined to break records and draw cheers. The Lions, though, haven't had much success as a team with them. Perhaps with a new general manager and coach this offseason, Detroit's decision makers might choose to manage the salary cap by possibly parting ways with either or both of them.

Never happen but I'd love to see Jerry make a run at Stafford if Detroit is stupid enough to let him go. My favorite QB stat is QB efficiency in the red zone and Stafford is at the top of the list. Unfortunately if he leaves Detroit he probably ends up in Denver. BTW Cowboys number 30 in this stat.

You think you can win a Superbowl with Stafford? He has the stats but I don't think he has that "It" factor most of the Superbowl winning QB's/ Emphasis on most please :)

Calvin Johnson's ability to catch the ball in the redzone when doubled really helps the QB's efficiency.

You don't give up on a QB like Stafford to take stabs in the dark at QB.
Yes, his base rises to 17m but that could easily be renegotiated.
Stafford was solid and Detroit was quite good in 2014 so it isn't like he and the team has been bad a long time.

The Lions eat 11m if they release him, they could easily free up that much by just adding a year to his deal and paying most of his base as a bonus.
5.5 old sb, 5m new sb and 1.5 base would be 12m which is fair to low for a franchise qb.

I also don't see Stafford all the amped about hititng free agency coming off a terrible team season.
I think he'd work with Detroit to make his number more friendly.

But if he is a free agent there will be plenty of takers. He is flawed but he is also a huge passing yardage total guy.

Powerfull accurate arm. Has played very well in Detroit with (outside of Johnson and now Tate) very lack luster peices around in protection and the running game. Warford is a great lineman but he is similar to Frederick in that he is a great run blocker, passable pass protector. Reif is a middle of the road LT. They could do worse, but he isnt going help a poor line protect better. Almost Staffords while career reminds me a little of Romo's 2010-2013 in that him and Johnson really had to carry that offense and while he gets dinged the same way Romo did then, he is the reason its even been respectable

Stafford isn't going anywhere. And watching him this year, he hasn't been the problem. The putrid O-Line is the problem.

And if we could somehow land Jim Bob Cooter as the O-Coordinator, I would be genuinely ecstatic.

Stafford would put up numbers behind this O-Line and throwing to Dez.

Those 2 guys will be almost 1/3rd the Lions' cap next year under their current deals. Obviously, restructures are a possibility but I just don't think that is a tenable situation for Detroit.

I'd take Lynch, goff, or Wentz over Stafford.

I have my issues with Stafford, but he's far more talented than those 3 prospects. Only problem is him going on 28 and Romo won't be leaving any time soon.
