Jon Gruden: In Oakland, Bill Callahan told me, ‘let’s throw it every snap’

In Bill Callahan’s two games as offensive play-caller, the Dallas Cowboys have passed the ball 91 times and ran it 39. Only three NFL teams have thrown the ball more than the Cowboys and only five teams have run it less.

During Monday night’s game between Cincinnati and Pittsburgh, Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton threw 32 times in the first half of a 20-10 victory.

When the discussion in the TV broadcast booth turned to the high number of Dalton throws, former Tampa Bay and Oakland head coach Jon Gruden mentioned Callahan.

“When I left the Oakland Raiders, I watched Bill Callahan take over for me,” Gruden explained. “I don’t think he ran the ball one time. He says, ‘Gruden, why do you want me to run it?’ He says, ‘Everything is a two or one yard gain. Let’s throw it every snap.’”

There is a lot of BS in Gruden's comment...Bill C had one of the best RB in the league that year..... Bill C understands offense but everyone has a boss and Bill C is stuck with supporting his boss, Jason Garrett....

I guess that's why Jason Garrett has him on the staff. They love to pass. The Cowboys are a passing first team.

They should be. They are better at pass protecting than at run blocking because the interior line is so bad, and they have more talent at WR/TE than at running back.

When he said that he was talking about when playing the steelers (they were playing in the MNF game) when he said it... The situation was the Raiders couldn't run the ball for more than 1 or 2 yards per play, so he said to Gruden what's the point I'm just going to throw it against them, not everyone. Put the comment in the proper context

Charlie Garner had 1900 all purpose yards with Bill add in Tryone Wheatly and together the RBs had almost 2500yds

Guess who the assistant coaches were with Bill...... they are HC today

You've done some creative wrangling there to get the numbers you needed to back up your wild statement, kudos! lol Did all that happen in the year in question, even ignoring that fact that you dragged all purpose yards into a running back discussion.

OP shame for not providing a quote in context.

Murray had 20 carries in game 1. Game 2 we went a different way and still would have scored 22-30 points if not for fumbles/drops.

I trust Callahan over all the whiners here.

Gruden was just campaigning for Garrett's job. Nothing new here.

Bingo...and if the team continues to flounder, I would support the move despite that I believe that Garrett has brought the right people and thought process to the team (although no plan for the offense)

You trust one of the worst producing offenses in the league? OK

The numbers were around the same wen BC was OC for Gruden, not just when he was a HC. They ran 2 backs often and threw in a third as well. The idea that BC just wants to pass isn't substantiated by groun reality.

I was not at first, .. but I am now convinced that Lombardi or Landry could come here to coach and Jones would over-ride their authority and undermine what they are trying to do because of his insecurity over who gets the credit, so he will be perceived as the "football mind" in Dallas.

Jerry does seem very insecure when it comes to getting credit.
