Jones, Marinelli believe defense is ready to become a team strength

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli believe the unit is ready to come of the liability list and into the strength column.

"When I look at what we got out of Tyrone Crawford last year on the interior, when I look at how Terrell McClain came along, when I look at the interior, then I actually think that with the personnel we've got competing with them and behind them, I think we got real good inside push or rush that exceeds last year," Jones said, per ESPN.

"I look to the outside and I see the numbers we've got. I see the potential to have a rotation. I see the quality or the skill of those pass rushers out there and will say without hesitation we're dramatically better on the outside. Our coach will tell you that is to be seen. We've got to have the work that goes along with it.

"We've got a lot of guys back from last year," Marinelli said. "Now we lost some real good men too up front, but the men that are back from Jack Crawford and Mince, some real tough guys, Nick Hayden and Terrell McClain. They were a big part of this thing in terms of developing a toughness and the effort of that group. As we bring more men in and we get some young guys from last year with a chance to display their skill, now it's still about heart."...

Is the Dallas Cowboys defense better now than it was last year?
By Chris Trevino

I’m pretty sure all the rumors about Adrian Peterson and Matt Forte coming to the Dallas Cowboys have come to an end. It’s safe to look back at our draft and off season and assess what our ‘Boys have accomplished in order to improve the 12-4 team from last season. Before any additions or subtractions had taken place, we all knew the major facet of our team that needed the most improvement was our defense; our defensive line most importantly. So here’s my take on our current defensive situation.

I know we lost Anthony Spencer, Henry Melton and George Selvie but these are the same guys who led us to only 8.5 sacks combined. That’s clearly not enough. Sure we lost a long time Cowboy in Spencer but production is the name of the game and let’s face it, he just wasn’t cutting it; not for a team trying to make a real run at a Super Bowl Championship. Tyron Crawford and last year’s 2nd round pick, DeMarcus Lawrence, are ready for major playing time and both are fully capable of producing as we’ve all seen the flashes of talent last season. I think between these guys alone, we’re going to see at least the same 8.5 sacks but I’m betting on the over. If I had to pick a number, I’d say we’re getting a minimum of 12 sacks out of these two guys alone.

If that’s not enough, and it isn’t, the Cowboys made a huge splash in free agency when they signed sack monster Greg Hardy. Hardy is known for applying pressure to opposing quarterbacks and reeling in the sacks. Yes he has a pending suspension, but trust me he will be coming back just in time for that late season playoff push. In the draft, we added Randy Gregory, who was an absolute steal late in the 2nd round. With the addition of these two guys combined with Crawford and Lawrence, I truly believe our defensive line has been greatly improved compared to last years line which only produced 28 sacks as a unit...

Overlooked Demarcus Lawrence Will Have Breakout Year For Dallas Cowboys
By Cameron DaSilva @camdasilva on May 19, 2015

The Dallas Cowboys defense will have a new look in 2015 thanks to the additions of Greg Hardy, Byron Jones and Randy Gregory. Sean Lee is also a “new” piece on defense after missing all of 2014, but there’s one more player who is getting widely overlooked heading into 2015: defensive end Demarcus Lawrence.

Lawrence, whom the Cowboys traded up for in 2014, missed the first half of last season due to a broken foot but returned to make key plays in the postseason. Sure, everyone will remember his muffed fumble recovery against the Detroit Lions, but he redeemed himself in the best way possible with a game-sealing sack...

Lets get to the quarterback. Make that priority number 1. Get to that qb, confuse that qb, rattle that qb. Get to him. Consistent attack. Get his timing off, get him fearing, whatever it takes. This has got to be the new law in the defense. We cant do what we did with Ware, we have to do with what we did with Haley. See the qb, get the qb. Get him, dont play cute. Get him.

Untill Lee Stays healthy, I dont think you can count on him. If he is its a plus, but if not, were just like we were lat year.

exactly, im not getting excited over Lee, means well plays with heart and talent most guys wish they had. But include that body and its not worth it. Maybe this year wil be solid, but i wouldnt plan anything around him this season. We got some guys returning, we got some guys ready to emerge. Lets see whats cooking and build around what we know we can count on.

This article again eh? The one where Jones and Rod never say the defense is a team strength?

From what I understand, Sean Lee has had a partial tear in his knee for his entire time in the NFL. With that being repaired and he has actually healed, that could become a major game changer for all that talent he possesses.

or one hit might end it all. Is it worth it?

Oh I see, for you, the return of just the old Country/Western song: 'Mommas don't let your kids grow up to be Cowboys.' For sure, burn barrell material with any look that can be associated with prior disappointment. Yea, for sure...and the Union is still striking here at Sherwin Williams Aluminum. Think the company folds?

The upside is huge.
But there is a LONG ways to go.
That was a pretty terrible defense last year, though not as bad as 2013.

They have upgraded but Without an impactful 1T and a good FS I have my doubts

That isn't specific to Lee. Goes for any player.

no majority of hits most players are going to take. Lets be real. ITs one of teh reason people scream for younger guys. Lee took one hit and went down. A lot of factors, i know. But certain players dont have that benefit that they can take most hits. Every hit Lee, Payton take, is one closer to destruction. Most players are taking hits even ones that should have downed them. Its just the way things go.
