DALLAS -- Former Dallas Cowboys tackle Josh Brent was released from jail on Sunday following his conviction for a drunken car crash that killed his friend and teammate, Jerry Brown, the Dallas County sheriff's office said.

The 26-year-old Brent was convicted in January of intoxication manslaughter for the December 2012 crash that killed Jerry Brown, a Cowboys practice squad player. He was sentenced to 180 days in jail and 10 years' probation. It was not immediately clear whether he would be required to report to a rehab facility to complete his six-month sentence, which was expected to end in July.

Well there you go, somebody wanted a mean nasty DT, not sure he is so mean though but I'd imagine a little time in a cage can make somebody chiseled...

The NFL doesn't usually punish players beyond a significant legal punishment. Brent didn't violate league rules as with illegal drugs or anything like that. That said, I seriously doubt that Brent is in football shape, and he doesn't need the stress of trying to make the football team right away. I would guess he will continue treatment, get some therapy for dealing with his demons and guilt and perhaps target an attempted comeback next season.

I'm sure Goodell and the league will see to it that his Football career isn't going to restart anytime soon.....

I hope not. The guy made a dumb mistake....One that I would assume a good chunk of the players in the league and several posters on this board have been guilty of in the past. I know in my early 20s I got behind the wheel a few times when I shouldn't have. The guy has missed over a year, and probably most if not all of this year as well. Brent has been through a lot and did his time. I don't see what good suspending him does at this point. If he hasn't learned his lesson by now, he never will.

Perhaps, but what was the penalty handed down to guys like Vick and Stallworth? I honestly don't remember, and I wouldn't think it would be any worse. Of course, he did have the marijuana charge after that, so that might factor in. Regardless, when you look at who the Cowboys have on their roster right now, what chances does a rotational player, who hasn't played in over a year, realistically have of making the team? Sure, there are a lot of question marks on that DL right now, but is Brent any better than what we have at this point?

There was a story a few days ago that said the Asst DA had agreed for him to transfer to a rehab facililty. All that was needed was to go in front of this judge to okay it.

he did not learn it in college when he got his first DUI. He did not learn when he got caught trying to sabotage his bracelet while on bail. So why should he learn anything now?

He killed someone, that's a mistake to you??? I'm all for giving people a second chance on some things, not four and five chances, but he's had numerous chances and clearly hasn't learned from them and after killing someone because of his numerous chances, he should be in prison for a long time, not out looking to continue his career, if it was you or me, we'd still be in prison....I have no sympathy for him at all and I hope Goodell suspends him for the year......better yet, he should be kicked out of the league

Here we go again.

Any time a player has an opportunity of returning to the NFL, everyone could (not should necessarily) take a moment and review the league's Personal Conduct policy. It applies for every circumstance of this nature and certain players are not immuned to it. Here's the policy link:

http://nfllabor.files.wordpress.com/2013/06/personal-conduct-policy.pdf

Josh Brent is a repeat offender. Someone died as a consequence. He will be suspended. For how long? Who knows. There is a high likelihood Brent's reinstatement to the league will hinge strongly on the timing of the suspension.

People can support his rejoining the team. It's no big deal. Brent is not the first player to jump through hoops before returning to the NFL. He probably has a good idea of how long the process will take. The strange thing is the general belief that any player's return will happen as soon as he or she believes it will transpire.

Then again, this is another chance for general sentiment to portray Roger Goodell as The Devil. Poor guy. It's like he's the guy who's always getting into some form of trouble, legal or otherwise, and punishing himself for being stupid. lol.

I read he goes to rehab. S.Jones has already said he's not opposed to Josh coming back.
Welcome back then Josh

I'm sure he could use a little time to get his life together. If there's one thing he should have learned during all this, it's how inconsequential football is in the grand scheme.

I thought he was hauled back to court not just once but twice after he killed his teammate because he failed drug tests while awaiting a trial that would determine the rest of his life?

seem to recall something like that. After all this he still is trying to work the system. But then some here could care less who you have killed, mutilated, abused, etc as long as they can supposedly play (never saw much indication he was all that anyway)
