My opinion? I would have suspended Ray Rice for the season. Josh Brent? 2016 would be the earliest I would consider reinstating him. Good thing I'm not the commissioner :) , but punishment severity is not my point. Not knowing what the hell heck Goodell will hand out as punishment is. For instance, take this scenario:

Player is on the edge of losing it with his wife or girlfriend. In that split second before the physical abuse starts, the thought flashes through his mind... "Goodell's going to dock two game checks like he did with Rice. Or maybe it will be four? Shoot, I may not see six of them. Crap! I just don't know. It's not worth it. I'll punch the wall instead. Good idea! BAM! ow."

In my opinion, professional athletes require more than standard threats to ward off their stupidity. I think they need a little extra, something that makes them go hmmm. It's just my opinion though.

I agree with you completely.

I'd give him a year without blinking an eye and with Brent, well frankly he wouldn't play another down of NFL football. It's really just that simple.

lets see:

2 games for beating a woman; so I would guess 6 games for killing someone.

Hey as long as he isn't using cough syrup or caught having trace amounts of marijuana in his system, I see no reason why he should even get that much. After all, we all know that the use of marijuana and cough syrup are far worse than the crimes you mention. Or at least that is obviously the NFL's stance:

I don't blame Brent for trying to get reinstated and whatever the league may hand down in terms of suspention he will have to abide by. I don't justify in any way of what he did but he there is nothing he can do to undo it. He can try to put his life together

Let's see. Brent killed someone while driving drunk. He then failed a court-mandated drug test. He then went to jail.

No punishment from the league is an absurd stance. Following the Ray Rice fallout, we aren't going to see another PR nightmare.

He has already missed 20 games. You left that part out and you want to talk about 'common sense?'

As for 'going to jail.' That is a punishment and not something Brent did further. Common sense tells me about the principles of double jeopardy and cruel and unusual punishment.

But hey they should keep on punish him. The state should do it, then the league should do it. Heck, then you should go and picket him after that to punish some more.

To what end? Who the heck knows.

Yes, the interesting issue in comparing him to other players that get suspended is that Brent has already missed the 20 games.

He's paid his debt to society. Hopefully he'll be allowed to play. Or at least try.

He did not make any attempt to return following the incident. In fact, he retired. He had some physical injuries and was not in a mental state to play. He missed the final games of 2012 due to the crash. That is in no way relevant to a suspension. Since he was on NFI he may even have been paid for those games.

In 2013, he retired. He wasn't going to play that year. He was far more committed to spending a long time having his defense build a weak case (e.g., getting people at the nightclub to claim that water was served in champagne bottles). Note that both Leonard Little and Dontae Stallworth had their trials completed in a much more timely fashion because they took responsibility for their actions rather than tried to build a case that they weren't drunk. Yes, the league should give him credit for taking the year off. Doesn't matter that he couldn't have possibly played given legally mandated regular meetings with county officers, court dates, revoked bail, and trial.

That's not "double jeopardy" those are the consequences of his decision to fight the charges.

We have at least two other DUI manslaughter cases that I recall -- 8 and 16 games were the suspensions there. There is the precedent

The state punished him. Now you want the league to take additional punitive action. It is what it is.

He met with league and Cowboys officials and made the decision to retire after that. He missed twenty games. It is what it is.

So now he shouldn't attempt to defend himself in court or you are going to seek more punishment. . . .

You just do not want to consider that Stallworth, Jones, Little etc missed no games as a result of their state mandated punishments. You precedents are not representative of the Brent circumstances.

Word from Oxnard is that Brent will most likely be back. Sounds like Jerry's already made up his mind.

By mid season our defense will be super strong!! We will have Spence, Dlaw, and Brent to look forward to! ;)

Don't forget coach Lee with a full season to assist.....usually he only gets to coach a quarter of the season

The status hasn't changed. He either has come to issue on his own account, or he's not worth considering further in a role in the NFL. There is no partial ground available at those stakes. He can make a go there, and now...or in another path with success available, if he owned up as a person.
