Julius has protected our OL

We averaged under 3 yards per carry yesterday. Our run blocking this year has been horrendous IMO. But a lot of our problems on the OL have been hidden because of Julius. He'll average 3.6 ypc behind this horrible line, because he's getting good yardage every time there is any kind of hole, and we'll have multiple threads wondering why Julius isn't doing more and if he's too big or slow now. But the bottom line is that Julius is just what he was last year, and our blocking simply sucks. When we put in other RBs we look even worse. Unless Julius took them all out to dinner the night before and poisoned their food, the RBs are not to blame and surely not JJ.

I don't know if it's the emphasis on pass blocking or if our guys just aren't very good, but we're not going to have any kind of real running threat until these guys can start opening some holes. I think our OL also get tired as the game goes on. People have pointed to Julius as the cause of his problems running the ball as the game goes on - but I think the blocking simply gets worse. In the second half of games we are terrible at opening holes, the Eagles game being the lone exception. In yesterday's game we ran the ball 16 times in the second half for 26 yards - 1.6 yards per carry. We ran 3 times in OT for 0 yards. Anyone want to tell me that Julius is getting tired and isn't as effective when he carries the ball more? Or is it that our linemen are not able to get any kind of push in the second half of games???? We really need to address this or we're going to struggle later in the season when we have to play in poor weather.

U Got To Admit A-train Isnt Really A Hard Hole Hitter

There isn't much hole to hit. Barber didn't have much more success than A-Train. Barber averaged under 3 yards a carry. Thompson is the only one with a decent average, and he only carried 3 times. Once for 8 yards and 2 carries for a total of 5 yards. Either all of our RBs suck or we simply aren't doing a good job blocking for them.

It is pretty clear that all the emphasis that BP put on protecting Bledsoe has pretty much scuttled the run blocking. That and frankly the line is not playing as well as it did late last year. JJ still probably needs to be let loose more (especially since the designated hole often is not there), and maybe lose a little weight or gain back some flexibility. But bottom line I think that we would be looking back with nostalgia to Eddie George of Last Year if JJ was not playing this season. THAT is how bad it has been.

Julius is just what he was last year.
That's how it's looked to me too. Exactly the same. He's better than his line, he's injury-prone, he's good for 80-90 yards against a good run D, and very likely to roll up a lot of yards against weak run D's. That's why it's a shame he missed this one.

I think Thompson could have had a big day, if given the chance, although I wouldn't compare him to Julius. I just think TT is our best healthy back right now, and was surprised he only got 3 carries (just found out it was disciplinary). But maybe it was an experiment for BP, with the result being that this game proved that those are the only two guys who will ever be able to get 100 yards behind this line.

JJ being out and TT not playing much was the reason the Giants moved up from 26th to 12th in yards per carry allowed yesterday.

It may not get any better, Flo is dinged up alot, they all need hearing aids, agree that a-train is done and needs to join Eddie at the nacho stand...

Teams are still stacking 8 men in the box, now that we're throwing all over them, they will have to respect that. Rushing lanes will open up, we just have to stay patient.

Good post JD...glad you started this thread because this is indeed an issue, and may hit home as we go on the road to NY, WASH, and Philly in the month of November...

~ I have no idea why Flo is not opening up gaping holes...seriously.

~ LA is not nearly what he was in space...

~ Rivera was never a silver bullet, simply a solid/smart guard that does not make to many mistakes, however will never overpower anyone as we've seen him get bull rushed.

~ Big Al...man he is getting knocked all over like a pin ball in some places.

I'm not sure we will be able to fix this...we really do not have a pulling guard, or guys that move well. They can make the first hit and that's about it...

For the most part they are experienced pass blockers that know the tricks, but their lack of mobility is hurting in the running game.
