My football started out in 1957, in Bishop, Texas. Ronnie Bull rushed for 2,451 yards in 12 games and led the Nation in scoring at 225 points. He went onto to Baylor for All American for 1960 and 1961.

I started up for the 8th grade football team in Bishop, and we were unscored upon that whole season, in 1964. I was a defensive end and called plays for the offense as a tight end. My family moved onto Kingsville and I played 3 years in High School and was All District at linebacker. Played from 1966-1968. This is where I started as a player.

Ronnie was Rookie of the year and was halfback in 1963, until Gayle Sayers was drafted in 1965. Pat Summerall said he looked the part of his bull name. Ronnie then became the Bear's fullback. He helped the Bears win the team title.

Sid Blanks was the first black player to play for the Lone Star Conference for Gil Steinke at A & I University at Kingsville. In 1964 he became the first draft pick for the then Houston Oilers.

Quarterback Randy Johnson was drafted from A&I in 1966, with 1967 Eugene Upshaw, Randy led the Giants to a Championship game and Eugene went to the Hall of Fame in Oakland and was President of the Union Accociation.

Myself, I played a year at the Air Force Academy 1969, and then a year in 1970 at A&I. I hurt my leg that next season and was not able to then play. I was a linebacker/defensive end. I played with the following players.

From A&I, Dwight Harrison, Eldridge Small, and Levi Johnson were secondary drafted players from 1971 to 1973. Also tight end David Hill. All were Pro Bowl during their carreers. They were joined by 1st round drafted DE Ernest Price and 1975 Houston drafted running back Don Hardemon.

Karl Douglas was drafted in the 3rd round by the Baltimore Colts in 1971. The year that Johnny Unitas and Earl Morrill left.

The Bishop and Kingsville area were the center of a lot of football development for the NFL under Gil Steinke and then, Texas A&I.

It was a hot bed then...
