Just got back from the game and here are some my thoughts from being there:

First of all it is beautiful stadium although parking is not great but we found a parking attendant who let us park for a discounted price and walked about a half mile to the stadium.

The field was not as bad as it was portrayed from my view point. There was sod that appeared to be just put down and with a little time should mesh with the rest of the surface. Didn't appear to be a problem for the players that I noticed.

Collins has some very good blocks where he drove his man completely off the line of scrimmage. He also appeared to get to the second level quickly. There were times where I thought he left his initial block too quickly to get to the second level but you can't fault his desire to block you into submission.

The times that I focused on Gregory, he appeared to create problems for the O-lineman in front of him. There were times where San Fran doubled team him. He appeared to have good back side pursuit as when Smith made that tackle for a huge loss in the 2nd qtr. Also his pressure on the qb led to Gardner's sack. The only negative that I could see was it looked like he took some plays off. It could be because he was tired but I saw two to three plays where he just got out of his stance and didn't make much of an effort to even go around the tackle. Some other people around me noticed this too.

Why did the Saints cut Corey White? He seemed to be in good coverage from the little that observed him. The holding call on Scandrick on the Niners first drive was blatant as I ever seen. The two officials saw it immediately.

Witten is the utmost veteran leader. He was helping everyone on the sidelines it appeared. Midway through the 1st qtr I noticed him and Lee discussing something off to the side. It appeared that Witten was given Lee some pointers on if a TE does this, he is going this way. It was interested to see.

Weeden and Vaughn are not good at all and I would be very concern if Romo goes down. That can be said about every team in the NFL though if their starter goes down. Their performance was bad in person. I can only imagine how bad it was on TV.

Whitehead is very fast. In fact, the guy I went with turned to me and said that guy is quick. He might break one.

I think we will be fine with Randle and McFadden if they can stay healthy. With our OL I think they can make holes that these two will get thru in a hurry.

Our special teams were not special at all. The punter in the 2nd qtr was terrible and the guy who blocked the punt and ran it in for a TD was partially blocked. It appeared that the Cowboy player ( I think his number was 41) made a half hearted effort to block him.

Hopefully next week will be better. I know that a lot of the starters were out and will come back this week. Maybe that will help in our performance.

Thanks for the observations - I was watching a feed and couldn't tell much of anything in detail. I did wonder if Garrett was giving Randy all of those reps to check his conditioning and it appears that could very well be the case. I'm still hoping it was just to get a good look at him, though...

Just got back from the game as well. Agree that Vaughn and weeden looked real bad up close. And special teams was atrocious. It felt like none of our guys could place a good tackle.

The only positive I could take away from the game is none of our players got injured and it's so nice to see all the nor cal and California Dallas fans. Took amtrack to the game from Sacramento and the majority of the riders were in Dallas gear.

He's pretty much a lock to make their roster. I'd gladly take him on the team.

Weeden and Vaughn were terrible. I know its just one game but I don't think Vaughn is the answer. I really don't like Weeden as well. He single handedly lost the Arizona game last year and I just don't trust him to win us any games.

I wish they dangle a 3rd round pick to the Rams for Austin Davis and dump both Weeden and Vaughn. Put Showers in the PS and call it a day.

did any good/great QBs in the past look this bad as we see in Weeden and Vaughn? I mean maybe we are just not seeing something here that the organization knows. do standard, run of the mill QBs in the NFL start like this? Or are these guys just more lower tier than that? like don't belong in the NFL tier? Obviously Weeden has had enough time to show us something different but he hasn't seized the opportunity. So does Vaughn need more time? Or can we tell, in any way, that Vaughn has no future on this team? I know this can be rather subjective.

is the drop off of talent from starting OL to the twos and the threes so HUGE that something like that can affect a QB like Vaughn? his reads do look slow though from what i can tell and he has made some bad decisions. can't tell though if some of this is due to wide receiver issues and the huge drop off from the 1s to the 2s n 3s.

I could only read the play-by-play off NFL.com, and it appeared that nobody was able to do anything right. It made me wonder if even the second stringers were taking the night off. And the vaunted OL? There must be a huge drop off from the first string.

On TV, it just looked like nobody really wanted to play and could not wait for the game to be over

Maybe the Rams tired them out?

I couldn't agree with you more about the special teams units -- I've seen some pretty bad ones that we've had in the past on various Cowboys teams but this one takes the cake. Here's hoping some major changes are in the offing for this sad-sack bunch. There's surely no shortage of substitutions that should be required to improve.

Agree. There was a lot of Cowboys fans there. In fact my buddy who is an avid Niner fan was surrounded by Cowboys fans. Also it was good to see no was hurt and like a poster said before, it didn't really seem line the Cowboys were interested in playing the game.

It's an interesting question. If it's because the Saints switched to Rob Ryan's press, man-to-man scheme and he's a zone corner type, then I like his prospects in Dallas.

Yeah live it looked like they were just going through the motions. I think if they had it their way they wouldn't have played the game. I think the whole grass thing got implanted in their head and they didn't wanna risk it. Garrett said he was mad after the game about the effort but on the sidelines everyone just looked lethargic and checked out which is a shame because there were a lot of cowboys fans that came out to cheer them on.

It was part of the fire sale they had this offseason just to get under the cap. Saints cap situation is a disaster, such that releasing a guy that made $1.25 million was necessary.

True, but if you google 'Corey White sucks', you get a tremendous amount of results. Saints fans weren't too happy with him. So far, I think he's been very good and he looks like a zone corner given his size which would explain his issues in New Orleans last year.

I never worry too much about special teams in the preseason. Most of the guys running around on these units won't make the 53.

I really only focus on the actual kicking and punting.

When you churn the bottom of the roster, ST is the first place a new player is put to see what they can do and if they are disciplined. You need a lot of discipline especially on coverage teams, stay in your lane and working towards the ball, a lot of youngsters get teh bit in their teeth and know they need to make play on ST to possibly make the roster and i think many becaome tackle happy and drift out of their assignments.
