Just how long is Ike out for?
There are a few precedents, though. Here’s the worst case scenario:
Seven weeks: Wouldn’t you know it. Kobe Bryant, at the ripe age of 21, fractured the fourth metacarpal bone in his right hand during the Lakers’ first exhibition game. Bryant had a protective cast on his right hand for seven weeks. I don’t think there’s much of a chance that Diogu is out for this long, as the injury isn’t on his shooting hand like it was for Kobe. And besides, Bryant wouldn’t even play through a broken fingernail.
And the best case scenario:
Barely any missed playing time: Eduardo Najera, at the ripe age of… 28, fractured the fourth metacarpal bone in his right hand during the Nuggets’ second to last regular season game this year. Though on his shooting hand, Najera only missed two games. Eduardo played 13 minutes between the 2nd and 3rd game in the first round against the Spurs. He didn’t, however, get any time in the fourth or fifth game. Question is: was it because of the Injury or did he fall out of the rotation?
The likely scenario:
Four weeks to six weeks:
With basketball players, all signs point to a recovery period of four to six weeks — maybe three if the thing heals just right. Jalen Rose fractured the fourth metacarpal bone in his left hand in the ‘03-’04 season, thanks to then-Warrior Cliff Robinson, and was out from February 8th to March 14th. When Brent Barry was a Supersonic, he fractured our now-favorite bone in his right hand, causing him to miss a little under six weeks of action. Scot Pollard broke his fourth metacarpal bone as a King, and although he was supposed to miss six weeks, he only missed about five. And finally, Bobby Jackson missed six weeks because of the aforementioned broken bone.
