This defense is not set by any means. The secondary is a huge unknown, the linebackers have been big stiffs, and the line has been inconsistent especially stopping the run. Now we do have a new coach/philosophy, but it needs to play out before we can definitively say. Our defense was terrible last year, are we sure we're set on defense to be turning down an opportunity with Clowney? If he blows up, and we sign him long term and move out the trash on the defensive line. If he sucks, we release him.

HOW WILL WE EVER KNOW IF THEY ARE GOOD ENOUGH IF THEY NEVER GET A CHANCE? WR is an entirely different conversation. I'm a big fan of having proven guys in there at WR because those are skill positions. We need mudders on the dline, not over hyped guys that THINK they are better than they truly are. Clowney isnt all that. If I have to roll the dice on a vet it would be Griffin.

wr is skill positions. DE doesnt have the ball in their hands. I was never a fan of what Dallas did with the wr core in 2018. That was dumb. But at DE, sometime you can hit on a unproven guy in camp. Its a big no on Clowney and a big MAYBE on Griffin.

yup, their demands do not equal up to their talent/payoff. Like you said, thats why they are still sitting there with no job.

I do not see the reason for the love affair with Clowney, the team that drafted him did not think he was worth the price and let him walk, Seattle does not think he was worth the price and let him walk. Is he an upgrade, yeah maybe a small one but not at his current price point.

    We know.

Jackson and Jelks weren't even good enough to make the active 53 last year. If these guys had legit, starting talent, they likely would have flashed something. They did not. They are depth guys, which is good to have, but thinking we don't need to bring in a legit starting RDE because we have Jelks and Jackson is kind of foolish thinking IMO. Again, it's the same logic they used at WR and it didn't work.

You are hoping against hope here, unfortunately. And again, it's the same process of overrating what we have that the front office used when building the WR depth chart (or DT before this offseason).

It's fools gold IMO thinking a couple of late round draft picks are going to blossom into a legitimate RDE rotation.

We are starting a clean slate, new energy, new sets of eyes evaluating players, needs, fits, schemes. I am trusting the process the new staff brings developing, finding Gems. I'm excited to see the youngsters on the roster bring it and see if they can help us win. Much rather find a guy that worked his tail off, bettered himself, honed his craft,is hungry and EARNED A SHOT than a high dollar fat cat. Joe Jackson is just 1 dude Im excited about. Jelks is another slippery fast DE. Armstrong and Anae may also see roles early. I just dont see a fit for a vet right now unless we have an injury or MAYBE a guy decides to not play due to covid. MM use to find guys we never heard of in GB that became good players. He was great at developing no name players. I'm trusting Mike McCarthy and his staffers.

hoping? maybe..but lookin at the numbers we already have. I didnt even mention the UDFA we brought in.This is the first time in over a decade that we have open competition everywhere. I'm not signing a high dollar DE that will expect to start. I want a guy to earn it, and on the cheap. Its a win win. Lets find out what we got I say. I'm not saying never sign a DE...just saying lets wait and see.

With just around 10 mil left of cap space I seriously doubt that the Cowboys are looking to sign a high priced free agent. They very well could be thinking on signing one or two more free agents but my guess they will be more of the cheap 1 year type deals. They also won't bring down the cap to the last dime because they will want to have some wiggle room in the event of injuries during the season and have some money to sign a replacement player.

I hear what you mean, and its definitely an ideal way to go about it.

Me personally? I'm caught in between all these years of being all hopeful on certain guys who never pan out and wanting to add a talent like Clowney, who I happen to think is a difference maker in the right situation.

I can see the youngins on the outside coupled with Aldon getting some pressure from the edges with the new stout middle, and I can also see them amounting to the UDFA and late round picks that they were.

Not sure, but at this point it appears your way is the way they are going with it.

We are excellent "hopers" and Dallas fans. No other choice while ego boy plays with his toy.
