In today's useless Excel analysis, I pondered the above captioned question. A few keystrokes later, I'm looking at "wins vs. teams with a winning record." Current record, that is, not necessarily on the date of the game.
As we near the half-way point more than 80% of the league can claim no more than 1 of these victories. 11 teams, or 1/3 of the league, have zero. 15 teams, nearly another 1/2 of the league, have only 1. This group includes Dallas, New England and Pittsburgh.
5 teams have 2 wins against "winning" teams: Hou, Chi, GB, TB and Arz. Hey, I thought the AFC was so much better? Arz nearly had a 3rd, if they'd have been able to pull off an upset in Washington.
Indy has beaten winning teams in 3 of their 6 victories. Very impressive!
Here's how these wins break-down by division:
AFC S (7) Indy 3, Hou 2, Ten 1, Jax 1
NFC N (5) Chi 2, GB 2, Det 1
NFC E (4) Dal, NYG, Phi, Wsh, 1 each
NFC W (3) Arz 2, Sea 1
NFC S (3) TB 2, NO 1
AFC N (3) Cle, Pit, Cin, 1 each
AFC E (2) NE, Buf 1 each
AFC W (1) Denver's win over Pit
