I remember that he was tearing it up in camp and we were all excited about him being the answer for us at FS. I know he got hurt and was on IR, but he should be back this coming year. Is anyone else thinking he might be one piece of the puzzle for us in the secondary?

This may sound really odd, but I am just as excited about next year as I was about this year after our draft. I mean when you think about our rookies from last year who were real impressive, (canty, Ware,, Spears et al) and you think about the additions that we will make, I think we will be the team to beat in the NFC.

I saw in another thread someone was saying how they thought the NFC looked weak, I agree. I think it is there for the taking.

When that was suggested during the preseason, Parcells reiterated that Beriault is a strong safety. Hopefully we solve our situation at free safety in free agency or the draft so we won't have to hope that Beriault can do the job.

I think he said that because he planned on putting him on IR. He was going to give Davis confidence by lettin him know he was the 2nd man for the job. The man certainly has the speed to play FS. He is probably faster than Henry.

I agree Adam....There are some very fine FS prospects in this years draft.

On the other hand, Beriault is one of those kids you can't help but pull for. Hope he is over his injury and ready to compete and win a spot on this team in TC.

So am I ..... This season the kids grow up to be Cowboys. The NFC is still up for grabs so kiddos go take it.

Beriault certainly looked promising and I look forward to seeing him on the field next season, probably not as a starter, but he's a player and should see some time

I'll be happy if we land a free safety to hopefully groom into a future starter at some point in the draft, but we might be better off signing a young veteran free safety in free agency to take over Keith Davis' starting role.

A rookie starter would have his share of growing pains no matter how highly he was selected and also be in danger of hitting the rookie wall long before the playoffs arrived.

As for Justin Beriault, he just seems like one of those players you can't help but feel good about, IMO.

He's never played free safety before and should at least start as Roy Williams' understudy, and I have no idea how he will develop in pass coverage in his second season.

But there's no doubt he displayed a nose for the ball last pre-season.

And I know he'll stand out on special teams if nothing else, so i look forward to seeing what he looks like this summer.

Does anyone remember what kind of injury he had that put him on IR?

I don't see Beriault getting playing time as a FF next year. He was never really asked to play far from the line of scrimmage at Ball State. He has a nose for the ball and should be a strong ST player and a backup to Roy at SS next year.

I wasn't quite sure what landed him on injured reserve, either, though I knew he didn't pop a ligament or tendon.

This is from kffl:

How serious is a meniscus injury??? I mean is it something that can have a lingering effect?

A meniscus injury is typically a minor thing that should only sideline a player for a few weeks.

But the first report indicated microfracture surgery was also necessary.

That's usually reserved for players with degenerative knee conditions like the one that sidelined center Al Johnson for his entire rookie season.

I didn't remember that being necessary for Beriault.

Beriault should be fine, we'd have heard otherwise if he was having trouble with the recovery, but it's a much bigger setback than having a minor procedure like meniscus surgery that would basically be used to hide a player on injured reserve to keep his rights.

If Parcells didn't think that he could play FS, then why draft him? I mean, FS was our need at that time, not a backup SS.

Thank you Sir very informative post.

I think I recall Beriault entering TC bothered by the knee......I believe it was an old college injury.

We haven't had a free safety on the team since Bill Parcells has been the coach.

Mike Zimmer evidently brainwashed him into believeing teams are supposed to start two strong safeties to better defend the run.

Seriously, even if Parcells hoped Beriault could develop into a future free safety candidate, it doesn't mean he would start out there.

He was making a big jump in competition coming from Ball State and parcells said he'd be a strong safety if he made the team out of training camp.

Adam, what a guy like Beriault can do for us is spell Roy. The net effect would be that our deep defense would be better because our best safety won't be going into the last five minutes winded.

David.
