The 49ers and quarterback Colin Kaepernick began discussions on a new contract extension at the combine, and sources tell us that the three-year veteran wants a deal similar or slightly better than the ones given to Jay Cutler ($18.1 million per year, $38 million guarantee) and Tony Romo ($18 million per year, $40 million guarantee). While no one expects the 49ers to let Kaepernick go anywhere, we hear that if the 49ers don’t get in Kaepernick’s range, the quarterback would be willing to play the 2014 season at his base salary of $973,766 and postpone negotiations until next offseason instead of signing a below-market deal.

The 49ers will be in the market for a QB after this year.

This is the year Kaepernick either becomes a legitimate quarterback or he gets figured out by the league.

I just don't see Kaep as a $20 mil/year QB. To me, those types of QBs are the ones that are asked to sling it around and if need be win the game for their team.

Kaep has done a fantastic job as a bus driver.. Not sure about his ability to sling it around on a regular basis.

5-3 in elimination games and he choked this year and cost the 49ers a trip to the SB. Let him walk.

The league already has him figured out. Just make him throw the ball.

Guy can't read the whole field. The offense is limited to just 2 reads for him on one side of the field. If I'm the 49ers, I'm not doing this but hey, this is what you get when you have a guy who becomes a media darling.

Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of guys.

Whatever happened to honor, loyalty, sacrifice? Players who are superstars and willing to play at vet min in order to best help their teams win the Lombardi? Vet min for them is vastly more than most Americans make. Why all this greed?

So much so that all he has done is knocked on the door of winning Super Bowl twice in his first two years.
The over credit and lack of credit given to quarterbacks makes me laugh sometimes.

Not really directed at you AmberBeer. Just general comment that was triggered by your post lol

No problem. I was just stating what the league knows. Make him throw the ball, and your chances of winning go up. And he hasn't knocked on the door to the Super Bowl twice. The 49'ers have.

Really how many plays has he made? When it counted? For a new guy who is NOT a pocket passer and probably never will be. Honestly they should give him next year and then look at an extension.

He's certainly nowhere near an elite guy but I think he's pretty good.

I think the Niners roll with him for a long time.
