Kai Parham vs. Bobby Carpenter

I know Bobby Carpenter gets a lot of mention around here as being a Parcells guy and a good fit for the 3-4, but I like Kai Parham better. He could step in as a rookie considering he's already played in Groh's defense. He played ILB this year in Groh's 3-4 and was Virginia's leading tackler, but he also moved outside as a nickel pass rusher when Ahmed Brooks was hurt and had 8.5 sacks. I think at 6'3 255 can play either position. He was a DE in high school. Groh is going to give Parcells rave reviews about this guy, as he reportedly loves the kid. Groh gave him the nickname "The Hammer" for the way he hits. He's declaring as a junior for the draft because he's already earned his degree.

This guy sounds perfect for us, I don't know much about him at all, but playing for Al Groh is a big plus for us as Parcells trusts him and they play the 3-4 defence. Question - Do you think he would be around for our 2nd round pick ? Or is he 1st round talent, because I would like to see us draft McNeil ROT in the 1st.But your right, he sounds like just what we need at LB...

Its early, but I think his stock is similar to Kevin Burnett ... late 1st - mid 2nd. He was told by his NFL advisors that he was going to be a Day 1 pick. A lot of people think he'll be 2nd round, but he could also see his stock rise because he's a bit of a physical phenom (he was benching over 400 lbs. by the time he was in high school). But its a deep year for linebackers.

I have not got too see Virignia play much this year so I really do not know much about the guy.

However It would be a plus to have someone who has played in the system already and under a similar style coach.

With that said....it would be very hard for me to say take this guy over Carpenter because I have seen Carpenter play and know he is a good player.

Would rather take Kai Parham in the 2nd to play Dat's vacated spot. Don't want to waste a first to get Carpenter when we need a tackle in the worst kind of way.

I like Carpenter myself and would love to have him on the team. I work with an OSU alumni who feels Carpenter was the best LB on that team. He did not get the pub that Hawk did but said Carpenter was the heart of that LB core and after seeing him play the past 2 season I would agree.

If Parham is an ILB, it will depend if Parcells is moving Burnett inside,as has been speculated. With the sacks Parham had this year covering for the injured Brooks, - can he transition to outside at the pro level? That seems to be why people are hot for Carpenter.
As always, the Draft will become clearer after free agency. But Parham would be great if he somehow fell to us in the 2nd,imagine the flexibility with Burnett, Parhem, Ware,James, plus Fujita and Fowler,Thornton and Singlton. That would be pretty impresive.

I don't think Parham would have much problem playing outside, considering he was a DE in high school and was a nickel pass rusher for the Cavs. Plus, he already knows the defense and the terminology.

I liked both those guys a lot from what I saw of them. They both seem similar to me in size, athletic ability, even stats are similar. Both lined up at DE at times to rush the passer, I think they both could be looked at as 3-4 OLB's, or ILB's. It seemed like Kai shed blocks really well.

I'm still hoping my boy Burnett gets healthy and mans one ILB spot....but this is a deep draft of LB's, and one would be hard to pass up.

I'd still rather have Carpenter. But to play inside, not outside. Hell, if we can get both (Parmah to play outside) that would be even better.

Well, I like both. I wouldn't dare complain if the Cowboys got either one.

I'm interested to see what is going to happen with Burnett. I think he's going to eventually move to the inside. When he was drafted Bill talked about him being a "bubble" linebacker who would be good inside. Add in Fowler and the good things he showed and Shanle, who also seems to have a role, and I think the outside LB spot is where the team is weaker.

I think that Parham could play outside and do a very good job of it. The same goes for Carpenter. But if I'm not mistaken, Parham has proven to be more durable. That kind of gives him the edge in my book.

Yep, I wouldn't be unhappy with Carpenter by any means. Especially if you can get him in Round 2. I would give Parham the edge as the better fit here because of a) better health b) already knows the defense and the terminology c) almost 2 years younger. Plush, I think Parham just has a little bit more ceiling that he hasn't hit yet.

Personally I think theyre both ideal 3-4 guys and I would love to have either one here. I think it will depend on what Parcells decides to do with Burnett.
If he actually does move Burnett inside, i'd prefer Carpenter. If Burnett stays outside i'd rather have Parham.
I just really do not think you can go wrong either way. I hope Parham falls to us in the 2nd though, because I Dont think Carpenter will.

ya I have to agree here. Carpenter will not fall to us in the 2nd, and I dont want to spend first rd pick on an LB when we can have our choice of some great tackles.
Parham should be there in the 2nd provided he doesnt blow up the combine, and he would be a perfect fit here.

Burnett may not be back at full speed next year, so that may be another reason why he may be a better fit inside.

Hiero, agree with your "want" list as per the draft.Who is the FS your looking at in the 3rd? If the first 2 rounds went the way you hope for I would be estatic.

Pat Watkins. 6'4 200 lbs. He would really be perfect for us. He is a cover safety, not a strong safety first of all. He's tall of course, long arms and good speed. I mean if I could create a FS for our team to compliment Roy good, it would be this guy. I think Parcells could mold him into a probowl caliber guy, he certainly has the talent and measurables. If he fell to us in the 3rd, i'd be ecstatic.

This is one of the other guys i would like at FS for us. He is a bit smaller, but better tackler than Watkins and more versatile.

I think Carpenter has a good chance to fall into the second. Those nagging injury problems are going to scare some teams.
