Proof the entire sports media are as bored as we are this time of year. Believing Kaiir Elam is the key to the season when we have so many other question marks has to be apex of grasping for a storyline to write about in early July.

No doubt the Cowboys need to find a CB to play while Diggs is out, but I can name 3 other players who might be even more important than Elam after giving it 2 seconds of thought.

How about Tyler Guyton, for one? Mazi Smith, anyone? Dak? I am pretty sure Booker needs to live up to his 1st round hype too. RB?

Why can't he be one of the keys to the season?
He will be replacing a huge spot, and will be counted upon.

They other players such as Gutton and Mazi have surrounding players to help if / when needed, they play as a unit more so than a CB in a way.

Dak, yes, but he too, relies upon the OL for protection, the WR's and TE's running the correct routes.

As we heard many times, CB's ore out there on an island at times.

Disagree.

If Revel and Diggs miss significant amount of time the first half of the season, then Elam has to be relied upon as a starter.

At least with Guyton, if he struggles, you can move pieces around (ex. move Tyler Smith outside, put Bass in at OG, et cetera).

There is no such recourse with CB.

He wouldn’t crack the top ten IMO.

Keys to the season…

1. Prescott health. Yeah I know about half around here can’t stand him, but if that hammy ain’t right, or something else happens, the season is over. See: 2020, 2024.

2. Solomon Thomas and the two 7th round DTs. If they don’t figure out how to stop the run they have no shot vs the better teams, which there’s no shortage of on the schedule this year.

3. Guyton getting it right. He could basically pee all over Jerrys car every day after practice and still be handed the starting LT job, so #1 being the case has a lot to do with him.

The rest can fall in as it will, but these are the top three.

I'm not worried about Booker or Guyton. Mazi is another matter

Agreed with number 2

Yep, would have been #1 but history shows us there’s no hope at all once the starting QB is gone for the year. Especially this year, where the backup is a raw developmental guy.

Guyton and Pickens are the keys the offense

Need a whole bunch of dudes to step up on defense - Mazi, Sam, Kneeland, Murray, Elam, etc

Nothing silly about it to me. Now its silly to EXPECT him to be our saviour....but if it clicks for Elam and he shows the potential he showed his rookie season? Yes he very well could be.

NFL is a funny place. That Commanders team that made the NFC Championship was a heavily flawed team. But when you get unexpected play from the rookie QB, you get Frankie Luvu playing at a ALL Pro level, you get Scary Terry playing at a high level, you get Ekeler, Ertz.....all these old players playing at a high level....it can make up for shortcomings.

So yes Elam playing at a high level and allowing our secondary to play at a high level which as a result makes our defense play at a high level could very well help the overall play of this team

And who knows what Guyton can or can't do. Asim Richards might be a sleeper in all of this....who knows about Mazi...Toia might be a sleeper. You just never know with the NFL. We predict things to happen and in the NFL it rarely goes the way we predict.

Yeah only hope for the defense is IMO, the offense keeps teams having to keep up with the score and as a result that's gonna have to require a offensive line and run game. We know the potential of the offensive line but is it ready now? The future is very bright there but is that future now?

I think Robert Rochell is just as important to consider. He's got some experience too.

That was sneaky good insurance signing.

I'm not going to read that story ,

but there's no way he's the key to the season, If you're counting on Elam we're in trouble,

now what we're counting on is getting back Overshown, Diggs, and Butler, also with Revel being ready game 1, with still a lot of the season left to where they can be effective.

that's what we're counting on, The only thing we're counting on Elam and even guy like Hall and Carson is to hold down the Fort is long as they can with the rookie revel if he's can get back game 1,

there's a lot of question marks in that back end and it better get fixed quick...

why does nobody ever mention Richards? Why move an all-pro player

We have to count upon our current depth (what little we have) to hold the fort until we get more healthy ...

- i'll go further to say Plan B is to prepare as if a Diggs may not even make it back full health, or suffer another setback again ..

- i have my reserves about Digg's long term plan based off his current medical status but that's down the future road.

- i wonder what is the deal with CB Stephone Gilmore and the wait.. but maybe this club does not think the 35 year old CB ( yes,, he'll be age 35 in Sept)
has anything left , or why wait until other NFL teams nab him ? ...

- Wouldn't we want Gilly here & early to learn this new Eberflus defense ?
yet why is the 35 yr vet CB still on the streets if he is any worth value ?

Because that all pro player has the versality, youth and game experience at LT, and LT is more of a critical demanding position than OG ..

Plus who'd i best trust to protect our franchise blind side ... Tyler Smith or Asim Richards

Well you're trusting an unknown now, why not put the next unknown in there, you take him out (Smith), then you have to replace smith, do you trust someone coming straight forward at Dak (I hear what you're saying!)

i'm valuing the LT role more than OG interior, .

Asim Richard would have to have an off the chart impressive entire summer to have me think differently about NOT considering moving Tyler out to LT.
But i do think it would be neccessary to have Tyler takes some "emergency Plan B" reps in camps in spots & occasions in training camp to be better prepared should
moving him to emergency LT a possibility.

Plus what if Asim himself gets injured in camp ..or in games where he is backing up an " injured " Guyton ?

And .i don't think it is a guarantee that it will be TJ Bass immediately filling in for a moved out Tyler Smith, the club may be more incline to trust vet swing man Mike Hoffman
to man the the LG backup than a Bass.

Yeah, he’s just 1 key of many. However I see the writers POV. The secondary starting out is going to be shaky with a lot of question marks. An improvement along the d-line will go along way in helping them out.
