Great win today, Zeke may be running away (pun intended) with the NFL MVP trophy. Look at how the team played in the first half and then at the end when Elliot was destroying the Pitt D.

Some random observations –

DeMarcus Lawrence is back and better than ever. He wrecked havoc in this game and could have had more than the three dynamic plays that he did, had we played against an average team.

Because I can’t live without being called a hater, this game shows by Elliot, Dak and Linehan are a virtuous cycle with each making the other two look even better. Dak was just OK until Elliot broke out. Also he will in time, but Dak doesn’t have his timing down with Dez Bryant (and yes, Romo does or did when he was healthy). Dak is absolutely awesome for a rookie QB, but there is no such thing as a transcendent rookie QB in the NFL.

If the Steelers just kick the 4 extra points they win this game.

Damien Wilson is playing very well at SAM and is getting better by the game.

Dez had a great game, especially coming so soon after his Father passed.

Byron Jones is playing very well. Its not flashy but its terrific fundamental football. It makes Barry Church into a good safety by hiding his weaknesses. Today it make Wilcox into an average safety by letting him do the one thing he does well – load up for a huge hit on a receiver. Jones isn’t getting enough credit but his ability is changing our schemes and coverages for the better, every single game.

The officiating is rarely biased in favor of one team – unless it’s the Steelers and Patriots. There were half a dozen ridiculous calls that all went for the Steelers, from Martin pancaking Shazier and being called for holding to a non-call where a DB literally face-masked Beasley’s helmet off his head. The PI on Anthony Brown was Offensive PI AND an uncatchable ball. Completely ridiculous and I’m a guy that always says the calls even out.

According to Joe Buck, the huge hit on the Steeler punter was by Keith Smart. Which is very impressive, considering Keith Smart is an Assistant Coach for the NBA Grizzlies and 52 years old. Great job Keith!!

GOOD run down. Heck yes the zebras tried to give it to them. They are a flagship franchise and the league REALLY wants them to make the playoffs. Plus, they'd love to tighten up the NFC East too. We were 2 TD's better than them but we had so much to overcome. But still did it.

This worries me if we end up in Houston in Feb.

There was also that ridiculous roughing the passer call in which the ball hadn't even left Roethlisberger's hand yet when he was hit from behind causing an incompletion you're right the officiating this game was complete horse####.

That looked ridiculous because it was, but apparently the rule says that any contact with the QBs head triggers that call. So even accidental contact with Durant's forearm means they have to call it.

I agree there were a lot of nonsense calls in this game but I'll give the refs the benefit of the doubt on that one. Its just a rule written in a blindingly stupid manner.

Great post.......I have to disagree with you that we lose if steelers get the 2 point conversions when they try. Mainly because we have no idea how the game goes after that. Maybe Dallas goes for it on 4th down if we were down further instead of settling for 3 points. Too many variables to say without a doubt we lose

Nope. Likely made no difference. Let's reconstruct the game with "normal" decisions.

PIT TD: 7-0 PIT
DAL FG: 7-3 PIT
PIT TD: 14-3 PIT
DAL TD: 14-10 PIT
---
DAL FG: 14-13 PIT
PIT FG: 17-13 PIT
---
PIT FG: 20-13 PIT
DAL FG: 20-16 PIT
DAL TD: 23-20 DAL
---
PIT TD: 27-23 PIT
DAL TD: 30-27 DAL
PIT TD: 34-30 PIT
DAL TD: 37-34 DAL

If PIT had kicked the XPs in the first quarter and the game progressed the same, at no point would either team have gone for 2, because the score wouldn't ever dictate it. Remember that all those 4th quarter attempts were by the book, based purely on the score.

The last 2 scores do get interesting, though. If the Steelers only needed a FG to tie in the last minute, would they have done that fake spike pass to Brown? Perhaps not. And if Dallas had needed a TD instead of just a FG on the last drive, how would that have affected playcalling, etc.? Who knows.

Just quoting the scores doesn't account for defensive schemes and strategy. If the score had been been Pitt by 4 at 27-23 instead of 24-23 they would have been playing to stop a TD instead of trying to stone the offense - which Zeke broke through completely. Its a different game if that point goes to a Dallas FG and a one point lead for Pitt, because they just run out the clock at that point.

I hear you, its my gut feel about the game and nothing quantitative. This was a game with two very good teams going toe to toe.

But not when they are out of the pocket. If they are out of the pocket they're considered to be just like a running back.

It wasn't the hit from behind that was called. The penalty was on I think on Durant that hit him on the head lightly with his arm. Iffy call but he did strike his head by accident. I hate today's Nfl with so many dumb calls.

I think the referee crew should be fined and suspended for missing that facemask call the player can be suspended for egregious hit then so can the stripes for being bumbling idiots

I think, when Zeke is balling we could win with any of the three qbs not taking anything from Dak he has been great and has done enough to win games but life is easier when they feed Zeke.

Another thing I noticed that you may have paid attention to as well on Zeke's first rush TD to make the score 29-23 it was by design from Tomlin to let the Cowboys score knowing that the defense were having trouble stopping their offense and with 1:45 seconds to play with Roethlisberger drove right down the field with that fake spike TD. But there was smart strategy by Garrett also still having all three timeouts with 42 seconds left using one and the Stealers D aiding us with actually two facemask penalties in which one was called given the offense good field position for a Bailey FG, but Zeke had the last say with the ultimate dagger to the Stealers' heart with his 2nd rush TD and Tomlin didn't let him score that one on purpose lol glad the team was able to beat not only the Stealers but also the refs.

Having those extra points could have made a huge difference just as making them could have. That's why I've always thought you take the percentages and kick until you have to go

Roughing the passer is a bit ridiculous. I remember a game years back. I believe it was Ware who was attempting to grab the QB while being blocked and ended up smacking his helmet with his hand and they threw the flag for that. Stuff like that should never be called. I could see if Durant came up and smashed him in the head with his forearm but the inside of your elbow isn't going to do any real damage.
