95 and 96 bring hope! Notice the uncalled facemask by the LT.

My big fear about this game was the DL but Irving, McClain and Mayowa stepped up.

Games like this from Irving are so fun to watch, but the crazy thing is that he was a Practice Squad guy for KC last year that Dallas signed away – and even then he only got significant snaps in six games last year. If – and it’s a huge if – he shows the same level of improvement next year as he did this year you are talking about a Pro Bowl caliber player. No way to predict, but fun to think about.

Mayowa had his second good game in a row and it was badly needed. He is also improving against the run, which is big. I doubt he justifies his salary but if he can be a solid backup to DLaw at RDE I’ll be completely happy with that. You can’t bank on a big FA signing at DE or getting the right draft pick next year, plus I don't count on anything from Gregory or Tapper. But Mayowa being a solid backup would be very helpful.

Defense: getting Claiborne back will make a big difference on this team. Winston and Evans are elite talents and we did well overall, but having a #1 CB back with the others like Carr and Brown playing against lesser WRs will be a huge help. The DL was mess for the first four games of the season until DLaw came back. Claiborne returning will have the same impact.

Sean Lee has 28 tackles in the last two games. Remember that for every post you have seen this year saying Romo is made a glass, injured every year and should be cut – two years ago all those posts were about Sean Lee.

I guess Jeff Heath isn't an Internet whipping boy anymore either.

Offense: Does Dak Prescott still suck? Does Dez Bryant? Dez caught every catchable ball thrown to him in this game, this is exactly why you can’t overreact to one Division game in the snow against an excellent defense.

I love the QB draw at the goal line. I always have and now we will get to see it regularly for the next decade.

It wasn’t popular on this board, but if DMC and Dunbar are healthy (and they look to be now), they add more than Morris does. Both could contribute going forward.

Remember when the Jet sweep was cool? That was October and now its December. I don’t see Lucky Whitehead on this team next year.

Jason Witten could play until he is 40 if he wanted to.

Other random notes – the headbutt penalty on Jameis Winston is very likely the weeniest penalty ever called in NFL history. My six year old takes harder hits than that on the playground.

Zeke jumping into the Salvation Army kettle was cool, but TO was the first Cowboy to do it.

I don't think very many people think Dak or Dez sucks, even before yesterday. My biggest problem with the Dak-Dez combo is Dez is mostly wasted on a QB that has the mindset of Dak. I mean Dez can still contribute, but in no way is he a 15 million dollar WR if we aren't going to throw him the ball deep. We would more wisely spend money on a WR that ran short precise routes that was quick enough to create separation in small spaces (a guy like Beasley). Unless Dak somehow changes who he is, he and Dez do not belong together (and for the record that IS NOT a knock on Dak).

Good post.

8 for 82 (10.2 avg), Zero TDs from Dez is possession receiver numbers. They need the #1 WR to come up with the TD ball that hit his hands and they need bigger plays. A 10.2 avg is well below the season average for #1 WRs. His own career average is over 14.

TO just dropped a ball in the Kettle.
Except their game plan was to get rid of the ball quick really a lot of dink and dunk which makes it hard to air it out.

Very good points, but my reaction is that until Dak is 100% certain in the offense I don't think they do a lot of deep throws. His game in an efficient ball control game like Tom Brady's so the number of deep balls isn't the right metric IMO.

Also this team has a ton of cap space and will have even more next year, I think there are real value issues coming up like Leary and T. Crawford, but Dez earns his money IMO .

Its such a fun daydream to think about Irving playing every game like this, something I mentioned in the OP. Think about these building blocks at DL -

LDE - Irving and TCrawford
1T - McClain (resigned) and Thornton
3T - Collins and TCrawford
RDE - DLaw and Mayowa

That is without Gregory or Tapper, or Free Agents, or Draft Picks.

I hope we do adress the DL aggressively regardless in both free agency and the draft to put the defense into the top shelf in sacks and destruction.

We are good in the middle if we resign McClain, we just need more catalytic players at pass rush.

I like what Irving is doing, he just needs that consistency and sky is the limit, he has all the tools.

Mayowa has been a disappointment overall but I do think he may be finding his way, time and the test of consistency will tell his tale.

Tapper is simply an uknown and with the questions of suspension with reference to Gregory, we need to really draft well and find a proven pass rusher in free agency as well.

Imagine this defense with multiple nightmares at pass rush, coming from everywwhere consistently.

I think it could be an excellent defense with the Marinelli wave attack of a bunch of good players, but without a dominant DeMarcus Ware type of player (though I wouldn't mind one).

I don't count on anything at all from Gregory or Tapper, I think its a bonus if it happens. Also Mayowa is a sunk cost, if we get a good backup RDE out of him at this point, I'll take it.

I understand you completely but I would feel better with at least one, maybe two dominant guys along with the good players you mention. :)

Yep, mobile QB gives defense something else to think about.

That's my hope. There are UDFA versions of Lucky in every draft. Hold your breath waiting for a turn over every time he touches the ball, not to mention some of the questionable decisions in the return game.

Somewhere I recall seeing the Cordelle Patterson from Vikes may be available next year... If so and price is right sign him. Instant threat on ST.

Romo is much older than Lee. If Romo was 30 instead of 36 this would be a different conversation and I'd probably be on the opposite side of the fence.

Romo is a QB, not a LB. Manning played with a fused neck and his arm was deteriorating as a result in the last season. The same can't be said of Romo's arm.
