The Chiefs should trade Eric Berry. There, let that sit for a moment. The NFL is a cold business, and sometimes the truth hurts, so let’s just get into it. There is no room for sentimental value here.

The Chiefs are in a bind. The bill on last offseason’s improvement is now due, and the Chiefs have to find a way to pay up. Trading for quarterback Alex Smith means no second-round pick this year (they also gave up their 2013 second-rounder). Signing wide receiver Dwayne Bowe to an extension means they’re down to about $4.7 million in cap space (only four teams have less).

But you have to give up something to get something. Berry is a good candidate, because his reputation has always been just a bit in front of his actual impact. His peers voted him one of the league’s 100 best players after his rookie year, and he made a Pro Bowl in 2012 despite a mostly mediocre season. Through conversations with NFL personnel men, Berry would likely bring back at least a second- and third-round pick — perhaps more. One scout thought a first-round pick would be possible.

Pipe, but would anyone be mad if Jerry traded for Berry? We have several holes to fill, but for (potentially) a 2nd and 3rd round pick? He's a 3-time pro bowler and only 25. Do it Jerry!

I remember when Dallas signed Carr some where debating who was more talented DB in KC. It would be interesting to reunite them. But KC isn't getting more than 3rd round pick from me.

What??? There are maybe two players I'd prefer over Berry in this draft.

You probably have me on that one, but who are they? We know we're not getting Clowney and I'm hoping for Donald; if Donald is not there it'd be something to think about. I'd rather see them get a stud at DL with 1st pick; if Berry is that good get rid of 2 for him but what will he cost in the end as far as salary and are our current guys coachable to his level? I don't follow the guy so enlighten me.

Absolutely. Our first this year would be a bargain.

Good lord.

And to answer, no. We do not need to grossly overpay in the form of giving away draft picks and then signing him to a costly extension. I would much rather roll the dice that Earl Thomas decides to test free agency in March of 2015 and use our projected $20M in cap space to make a play for him.

Or, just wait for Eric Berry to hit free agency because he's about to anyway -- KC won't be able to keep him. That Dwayne Bowe extension makes no sense.

I'd do a 2 or 3 for him. He's a game changer and I don't see Dix or Pryor being better then him.

I can;t see Thomas getting away from SEA. Our mid 1st for a position that hasn't been adequately replaced since Woody. There is nothing guaranteed @ our slot; Berry is a guarantee. It will never happen, but don't act is if it some dumb theory. He would solidify the secondary. There is no DL that are likely to be there that can contribute (Barr/Donald). It wouldn't be a bad trade tbh.

It would be a monumental mistake and have shades of 1990s Jerry and Lacewell, doing stuff like giving away two 1sts for a player (Galloway) who would have next to nothing to do with the overall success or failure of the team.

Eric Berry does not make this defense any better than it was last year. We need to do everything we can to continue to infuse the front with more young talent. Giving away a first rounder, particularly if you're looking to swap firsts to trade up for an Aaron Donald or Anthony Barr, is a terrible idea, especially when the player in question is likely to hit free agency anyway.

It's like the Roy Williams trade. Colossally bad trade -- he would've become a free agent after that year and would've signed with Dallas anyway.

Maybe.

But he would also cost more.

At this point we need to add depth and I'd take a high grade rookie with potential over him since there is less opportunity cost.

Eric Berry wouldn't make us a contender, but he would inhibit us from gaining the depth we need to be a strong playoff team.

Stop making all this sense Cas (Cali Smith?), it is unbecoming;) But draft picks are over rated @ times. What if we bust on the DL pick? Berry looks like a great trade.

If we bust on the DL pick, at least we're doing the right thing and selecting players that are projected to help us in our areas of weakness.
It's like a basketball team -- you've got some nice players at the wings but you really need to draft a Center...so you trade away your number one pick for another shooting guard. Not exactly smart personnel management. ;)
