Keeping Melton won't be difficult

Even with the contract we signed him to, his contract is actually a lot more team friendly than Hatcher. There should be no Hatcher rueage here, as there should be no doubt that Melton will play better than Hatcher over the course of their 4 year contracts, if he isn't already playing better than Hatcher now.

The biggest difference between Hatcher and Melton's contracts are that Melton has no significant signing bonus.

The contracts outside of that are almost identical.

You can restructure Melton's contract next year to cut the edge off of the 9 million and you can also give him an extension sometime in the next couple years if you want.

If Melton continues to play like he has , its a no brainer. He is also 4 years younger than hatcher. So, looks like we got an upgrade on the cheap. Signing Melton is one of the best decisions Jerry and company have ever made.

I'm not positive we get that deal without Marinelli. It seems to have been a favored coach and hometown discount on top of his legal trouble and injury concerns. The cards really aligned perfectly in getting him, and fortunately he is playing to expectations.

If it were a 9 million dollar signing bonus would you say anything different?

The cowboys are in great cap shape for 2015. DT's don't grow on trees and Marinelli is pretty dam picky about the type of DT that fits his system. When you have a 28 year old guy like Melton playing at a pro bowl level in this system, you keep him. 9 million is a bargain compared to Suh, McCoy, and Gino Atkins.

Great news! Thanks for the info

That is debateable depending on who you ask. With so many FA's to sign it's to know what we will be looking at once we get to the other side.

I've read that by restructuring a few contracts, they can create over 50 million in cap space. With the window closing on Romo's career and the team being so good this year, I think Jerry and Stephen will go "all in" this offseason.

1. Restructure $15 million of Romo's $17 million into a restructure bonus

2. Restructure $10 million of Tyron Smith's salary into a restructure bonus
3. Make Brandon Carr a June 1st cut.

These 3 moves clear over 33 million in cap space.

Melton has been real impressive these last few weeks. I think he only gets better w Lawrence and the rest of the team healthy.

I probably would, because then I would start asking myself if the player is going to be as hungry and motivated as he currently is once he gets the guaranteed money in his pocket.

I'm just concerned with having enough money to retain the multiple free agents we'll have next year.

resign him on a 4 year contract and toss in a $2mil per year signing bonus and then his 2015 salary suddenly becomes $1 mil.

I don't see the advantage to the player in agreeing to that deal.

He's got a pay or cut deal for $9 million for 2015 in place already.

plenty of advantages....like

1) he still gets his $9 mil
2) he has a long term contract

It is win-win for the player

Other than Ro, Dez and DeMarco there isn't a FA we'd really miss I don't think.

You can't keep restructuring Romo at this point. It will without a doubt come back to bite us. You can't keep pushing $ into the future for a player that has a very uncertain future. I know the $ cash up front now would be enticing, but it's a bad business decision for the long run in my opinion.

I do agree with the rest of your ideas though
