Keith Emerson of Emerson, Lake & Palmer Dead at 71 of Suspected Suicide

UPDATE: Santa Monica Police confirmed to Billboard that Keith Emerson died of a gunshot wound to the head and his death is being investigated as a suicide.

Original Post: Keith Emerson, one of the most legendary keyboardists in rock history thanks to his work in Emerson, Lake & Palmer and The Nice, died at age 71 on March 10, according Emerson, Lake & Palmer's official Facebook page.

"We regret to announce that Keith Emerson died last night at his home in Santa Monica, Los Angeles, aged 71," the post reads. "We ask that the family’s privacy and grief be respected."

Very sad news. The man was pure genius. Listen to the album Brain Salad Surgery and then realize this is 3 people. Saw this tour twice and sat right at the stage in awe. I saw them several other times of earlier and later tours as well. Great time to grow up and witness the bands of that era. Rest in peace Keith Emerson.

Awful news. Emerson was an incredible keyboard player. His work on Brain Salad Surgery and Pictures at an Exhibition was fantastic.

RIP to one of the all time greats.
