Key Dallas Cowboys Off Season Moves

By Randy Inman

The NFL off season has been moving right along since the Giants upset the Patriots in the Super Bowl. Lots of players have changed teams or resigned with their old team. The Dallas Cowboys are America's team so I thought I would do an article about their off season moves thus far. This article will cover main stream players who should make a real difference, and does not cover ALL player signings by the Cowboys. As I write this it is April 7th 2008 at around 5:30 PM eastern time. Any player moves that take place after this of course will not be in this article.

Perhaps the most important off season move by the Dallas Cowboys was preventing offensive coordinator Jason Garrett from leaving to take a Head Coach position for another NFL team. It is very possible that Garret and Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones have a deal for Jason to take over as head coach in 2009. This almost makes current Cowboys coach Wade Phillips a lame duck. Garrett was wise to stick around as see what happens as any new team he joined won't have the offensive talent the Cowboys do.

On to the players, the biggest thing in the news at press time is a possible trade for Pacman Jones from the Tennessee Titans who may be the closest thing to Deion Sanders since well Deion Sanders. The problem is Jones is often in legal trouble and was suspended for the 2007 season for that reason. The Cowboys have had success with troubles athletes (Owens comes to mind) but Jones is a thug and it could blow up in their face. But if the trade goes through (they are squabbling over the price) and Jones keeps his head on straight it could help Dallas regain Super Bowl glory.

Key Losses this offseason for the Cowboys were former franchise running back Julius Jones who left as a free agent to join the Seattle Seahawks. This clears the way for the better back Marion Barber to be a full time starter. Also former Dallas Cowboys defensive backs Jacques Reeves, Kenneth Davis and Nathan Jones have joined the Texas, Dolphins and Dolphins respectively. Defensive Tackle Jason Ferguson was traded to the Miami Dolphins and their new boss Bill Parcells.

By the way my hat is off to all of you guys! I have been a die-hard fan since 1973 and this forum by far is the BEST place for Cowboy information. I would just like to thank each of you for your knowledge and love for " The Boys"

I know this author qualified his article by saying this, but you would think he would have at least covered SOME of Dallas' off-season moves instead of just talking about a potential one.

How about the signing of Flozell Adams? Or what Zach Thomas might bring to the defense? How about franchising Ken Hamlin?

This off-season has been quiet for Dallas as far as outside FAs go, but keeping a potential Super Bowl team mostly intact is the big news for the team.

This confuses me greatly. When was he a franchise back?
JJ was a good back and will return to his prior status. He did not put up good numbers but he always ran against a fresh D. A lot of the barbarians success was because of JJ.

lol I am a bit bias I guess. I have always liked JJ and felt bad for him.

Well, I can't say I blame you for saying it, just won't be popular around here with Barber's large fan base here. Barber will get his chance this year, guess we will see.

I guess we will see this year. I just like the idea of having a really fresh Barber going in fourth quarter to train a tired CB.

Dallas is perceived to have done nothing in free agency.

But really, what they have managed is pretty impressive IMO. They kept Flozell, ensuring that the OL is in tact for a second year, and really has only undergone one major change in 3 years (Davis replacing Rivera). That is pretty big IMO. The Chiefs OL in previous years had the same benefit.... and they gelled nicely. Hopefully our OL becomes more cohesive.

He brought back Canty, Hamlin, and Barber for a minimum of one year.

And he took a flyer on Zach Thomas.

This is a team that won 13 games last year. Yeah, I know, 13-3.... the Wade comments, whatever.

The point being, this team obviously does have talent. You don't accidently win 13 games.

The team is in tact. We lost JJ but he shouldn't be that hard to replace. We lost Nate Jones and Reeves, which to be perfectly honest, if we cannot replace them..... we are inept. So that shouldn't be a problem.

We added an ILB who can cover, which was a problem last year. And to boot, he has plenty of experience, which in our LB core, is probably a good thing. Ware, Burnett are coming off their 3rd seasons. Carpenter his second; Spencer his first; and Ellis has played 2 years as a LBer.

Then, we hit the draft, with 3 day one picks.

Jerry has handled the offseason thus far, pretty well. This draft is pretty important, because it could set us up nicely for the next 5 years....

So Julius was a franchise back and Reeves is considered a key loss.

Right.

I know re-signing flo was huge, but I think the most important moves to the team haven't happened yet.

1. Pacman Jones. Will it happen or not? With every day that passess I think it the chances dwindle. If Pacman is reinstated before Jerry works out a deal for him, the price goes up even more. Thats when other teams get involved, imo.

2. A WR to compliment T.O. We've heard all the rumors about Roy Williams and anquan boldin. I think we need a WR in the worst way, and one of those guys would surely put us over the top. I think chances are very slim that we land either of these guys, imo.

I know for sure that Jerry wants to win more than anyone on this board, so I trust that if there is a way for him to get this done, he'll do it.
