12. Dallas (7-5). For years, some in the league have grumbled that the Cowboys have an unfair advantage by playing on Thanksgiving at home every year. That’s true; playing at home in an exceedingly short week when the other team always travels is a big edge, as is what Dallas has now: the ability to give its players four full days off, plus an extra day before playing a Monday-nighter next week at Chicago.

http://mmqb.si.com/2013/12/02/nick-foles-peter-king-monday-morning-quarterback/6/

I've attended or watched on TV every Thanksgiving Day game since 1966..

..which I believe was the very first for Dallas against the Cleveland Browns with Jim Brown in his prime and Gary Collins at WR who was a terror to Dallas.

..and it was apparent right from the start that winning th.e Thanksgiving Day game..

..was the launching of a playoff run.

..and tHat happened for like 20+ seasons.

So yes..it's an advantage IF you win.

We have gotten away from that over the last 15 years..

and the team has to restablish the tradition.

Playoffs and several wins once there were the expectation.

This team doesn't play up to that standard.

We will see.

The Cowboys had to travel from New York back to Texas for the game, so they had no particular advantage in this schedule this season.

Second question; just what is to be disliked about the 1990s Cowboys offensive line?

Are we really arguing over the same Peter King whose "football" columns consist of 20% travel commentary, 20% observations on his favorite cup of coffee this week, 20% about his daughter's field hockey game, 30% some anonymous NFL source arguing in favor of King's pet cause, and 10% some pathetic, ill-reasoned pseudo power ranking?

Is it that same guy? Cause I don't think he's worth it.

The real agenda behind the complaints comes down to exposure and promotion of the Cowboys to a guaranteed nationally televised audience every year. Over the years, the various complaints have been lessened or eliminated, yet new ones have been created to keep the fight alive.

Need proof? You rarely ever hear about it being an unfair advantage for the Lions unless they are thrown in with the Cowboys, but you very often hear how the Cowboys, by themselves, have the unfair advantage.

Other proof? They added a third game on Thanksgiving night where a random home team is selected each year and they've made more of an attempt to have the Cowboys play on the road prior to the Thanksgiving game.

The biggest proof? They've added Thursday night games all season long so several other teams have Thursday games throughout the year now at home.

You could at least look at it objectively 10+ years ago and say, yeah, it's a slight advantage for the Cowboys and Lions, but that's their reward for playing on a day no one else wanted to long ago. But now, the only real basis for being upset about this is if you 1) hate the Cowboys or 2) are jealous of the Cowboys attention.

The proverbial nail-in-the-coffin solution would be to give the Thanksgiving away teams a bye the week prior to Thanksgiving which would give them 11 or so days before the game. The problem is if they do that, it will pretty much kill any chance the Cowboys or Lions ever lose their guaranteed Thanksgiving home games and also make any future complaint's agendas transparently obvious.

This sounds much more likely than any competitive "fairness" excuse. If they were really serious about that then shouldn't they also be talking about outdoor stadiums in areas with severe winter weather or stadiums that are ridiculously loud? The "fairness" argument is always trotted out by the media because humans can be tricked into believing anything if they are provided with a fictional villain and "fairness" is questioned.

Another thing I just thought of (sorry if anyone else has already mentioned it), but Thursday games are no longer sacred.

The NFL has had Thursday night games since the beginning of the season. So there are a lot of teams that get an extra 'bye'.

I mean, hasn't the league made it pretty much standard that everyone at least play 1 Thursday game?

someone call the wahhhmbulance......

The other teams that play on other Thursdays have a large advantage coming off that week. No mention of that....
Why think it through when you can bash someone for a headline.

So who Houston and Jacksonville are the big winners this week since they play on Thursday? Let me know how that works out for either team next April when both are drafting in the top 10 at worst.

Okay, first of all, a team's success (or lack of) in no way indicates if they're getting an unfair advantage or not. If Jacksonville was allowed to start every possession at the 30 yard line instead of the 20 as other teams do, they would still probably lose the majority of their games despite the fact that they're obviously receiving an unfair advantage.

Here's a better argument. There is another article floating out there right now, citing the dangers of playing on Thursdays, due to the fact that players aren't allowed enough recovery time from the prior week's game. Found it, here it is...

http://detroit.cbslocal.com/2013/12...appear-reggie-bush-says-its-like-a-car-crash/

So, if you take that perspective, the Cowboys are one of two teams (along with Detroit) that actually has a decided disadvantage because their teams are at a higher risk for injury. One could easily write an article about how unfair it is that the Cowboys and Lions players are exposed to greater injury risk than other teams because they are playing a Thursday game each and every year.

I heard him on Cowherd yesterday and Cowherd asked him who he thought would win the NFC East and he stated probably the Cowboys based on their remaining schedule vs. Eagles remaining schedule but he felt the Eagles were the better team. The better team? Based off of what. We beat the Eagles head to head, we also swept the Giants and the Eagles split with them. I'm really trying to figure out how they are the better team right now.

After watching their last couple of games I would say they definitely look better than Dallas on offense AND defense, they have improved a lot. I'm hoping the Cowboys can improve some too before the end of the season.

No they don't. They've scored 24 points against the Skins and Cards at home and then stopped scoring and jumping out to big leads and then needing stops and some help from the refs to hang on in those games. We've won a tough road game against the Giants and scored 24 unanswered in beating the Raiders.

Tradition doesn't please everyone, but it's still tradition.

Hasn't this been an argument for years?…. shall it never change!

This has nothing to do with tradition. As we all should be aware of living in a capitalistic system it was all about the money.

Because games were played only on sundays Dallas (and other teams) was (were) afraid to lose money from TV rights if they played on a Thursday.
So they made the commitment to play a game on Thursday only if they got the rights to play at their home stadium in return. Which they got.
No other team liked the deal so Dallas took it. The rest is history
